All joking aside, the worst thing we can do as a group is blow this thing up and/or out of proportion. This wasn't a big article, but an editorial post. I haven't seen or heard of any response from the paper. It will probably only get legs if we do something to help it... like contact the writer or otherwise throw fuel on the fire.
If it ever does get to be more of a story, then Mitch's suggestion about telling a good story of what the run does for the VFW would be a good approach. I just think we need to remember that we are definitely the minority here and in the court of public opinion would almost definitely be the bad guys with our "noisy boats".
Of interest, the LOTO Shootout has likely had these problems before and addressed them. I'm sure that event brings a boatload of $$$ to that community. Thus, they waive local noise ordinances so the big boys can come out and play for the weekend (if you preregister your boat for the events). That's an example of everyone can work together for happy coexistence.
