Divers search for drowning victim in Lake Conroe

By Matt Stephens
Updated: 08.07.10
The Precinct 1 Constable Marine Division and Dive Team is searching for a Houston man who drowned on Lake Conroe Saturday morning, a day after his 43rd birthday.

About 10:30 a.m., a call was received about a drowning at the south end of Lake Conroe, between Diamondhead and Rancho Escondido, Marine Division Sgt. Randy Sanson said.

Gerald Norman Ellison, 43, of Houston, was vacationing with friends in the area, Sanson said. Six friends, including Ellison, rented a pontoon boat at 10:05 a.m. and drove out to the main body of the lake. Ellison and another man went swimming for about five minutes when they realized wind had pushed the boat away from the swimmers, according to Precinct 1 press release.

Ellison and the man attempted to swim toward the boat. The first man reached the boat, but before Ellison’s girlfriend could retrieve a life jacket for him, Ellison had gone underwater and never came back up, the release stated.

Sanson said weather conditions were nice Saturday morning, with slightly choppy water. While the cause of the drowning is still under investigation, he believes Ellison likely drowned from physical exhaustion.

“It’s hot out here and you get exhausted quicker,” he said. “You go swimming 50 or 60 yards away from the boat, and the body’s not used to that.”

It is unknown whether Ellison had any existing medical conditions, but alcohol was not a factor in the drowning, Sanson said. The incident is under investigation with the Marine Division.

“The only thing they didn’t do was anchor the boat, so they had to swim towards the drifting boat,” Sanson said.

There were five units searching for Ellison Saturday evening, as well as three divers. The difficulty lies in finding the initial location where he may have drowned, Sanson said.

Ellison’s death marks the eighth drowning in Montgomery County this year, and the fourth on Lake Conroe. The most recent occurred July 7, when 23-year-old Augusta Newmeyer jumped from an anchored party barge.

I just saw the dive boat and constables boat heading towards Inland/Valero in front of the house, leaving the main body of the lake. I was wondering what was going on?
