Exceeding your tow rating... a thought.

I can verify that if you are in an accident, the police will go through your stuff very thoroughly. We were rear-ended while towing the Gladiator a few years ago and the police checked all of our weight stickers, our registration cards and even brought out the portable scales to weigh the truck and trailer. This accident wasn't even our fault, but they still did all of this to be sure that the truck and trailer were within the legal limits. Luckily we had everything in order and everything was legit and within limits.
It is just not worth taking the chance of being over loaded. Even if you don't go far with your trailer, you can be involved in an accident 1 mile from home just as easily as if you were 100 miles from home. With all of the traveling that we did with the last two boats, we were only involved in this one accident and it happened less than 10 miles from home. Just something to think about.

I just came across these pics of my hitch before I sold it. This is the Factory CLASS-III hitch that GM installs on the Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Avalanche, Avalanche 2500, Suburban 2500, Denali, Denali XL, Yukon XL, Escalade, Escalade EXT, Escalade ESV, and most of the Silverados and Sierras from 1500 to 3500 unless you order a HD trailering package. Note the construction AND the LABEL. It says some BS name (NOT RATING) of V-5 Talon (just like Ford Called theirs a V-something), however, its still rated at CLASS-III.
Note the difference between towing with Weight Carrying and Weight Distributing.

No one pays attention to any specs ....until after the accident when the insurance company says " SORRY WE WILL NOT COVER ANYTHING, BECAUSE YOU WERE NOT TOWING WITH PROPER RATINGS NOR EQUIPMENT" as outlined in yours/ours policy
