It's a whole different ball game out here. Long track sleds are not designed for speed, just floating in the powder. I do not know the rental company you are talking of, but most rentals here are long-track, ie. 144"-166" sleds.

If you desire to stay ON the trails, a short track will work fine, if you adventure off the trail be prepared to have a miserable day. You WILL be stuck all day. The mtns. around Breckenridge have been getting pounded. This means DEEP powder.

I do not know what the trail systems are like around there. We boondock and stay as far away from the trails as possible. I am sure there are trail systems that will get you acclimated and let you "stretch" your legs. Take it easy for a while. As has been posted they can get you into trouble pretty quick. You will have a blast no matter what you are on.

There are rental shops around here that rent the 1000 SkiDoos, but we are around 160 miles from Breckenridge. I think you will have a good time on the 600s.

Even a 440 fan you would have a blast on if its a mxz Skidoo or Equiv. Cat or Polaris In a sport Chassis..

The hp per cc of today's sleds are incredible. A new 500cc sled usually has over 100hp. I remember back in the day when the Polaris XLT came out we were blown away! Fastest sled I had ever been on(at the time) and they were about 85 hp, 580 cc and a triple. A new 600 is not even in the same league now.

I have owned a ton of sleds, from a 100 hp 500 twin to a 200 hp 925 twin and I can tell you that I have more fun on the smaller sleds. If and when I get back into it it will be another Polaris XC 600. As long as it's not freshly groomed and flat as a pancake(which is 1% of the time) I wait for all my buddies on their 800s at the stop signs!

Go rent a 500 or 600 and have a blast! :D

Jr, Your 500 will do 85 mph, but I can garentee you that you will wreck it and put yourself in the hospital if you even think about running around that fast. Even more so than boating, you need experience before you start hammering around on these toys. Be smart, and have fun

It doesn't matter which sled you will have a blast.

If they are new sleds then the Skidoos' will be a Rev 500 or 600. Arctic cats will be either a Saber Cat or Firecat 500 or 600 (same sled, but Saber cat is more of a trail suspension as opposed to a stiffer race type suspension). Size for size the Arctic cat will be a bit faster, but nothing that would be too noticable for a person just learning. Any one of them will provide a bunch of fun. The F6 (Firecat 600) will easily excede 100 mph. here are a few winter pics to look at.

I am more afraid of driving my snowmobile 110mph than my boat 160. I have owned at least 20 snowmobiles and have been riding for 35 years. A new snowmobile is as quick as a hot rod motorcycle zero to 60. Do not be concerned about 500 or 600cc they are both going to be plenty fast. Do not go off trail. You will get stuck. Watch out for the other riders and stay to the right of the trail at all times!!!! Meeting a snowmobile going 40 mph each in a tight corner is scary. Snowmobiles are by far the biggest thrill ride going. I have done a lot of motor sports and these sleds are fun. Mine is 140 hp and under 500 lbs.

I LOVE the Cross Country Edition ZR's, EvilTwin. That's what I want to buy for next season when I buy a sled. I really like that style of handlebars since I ride standing up 99% of the time. The ZR chassis is great, but I've yet to ride a Firecat. So before I buy again, I'll hopefully be able to drive a Firecat. Here's a pic of my old sled, really wish that I kept it.
