a good set of transom straps would of prevented that, all that damage because they didnt want to put them on or spend the 30 or 40 bucks...

I agree with Sydways about it relieving some of the friction when loading the boat. I would leave it.
You shouldnt rely on the winch cable to secure your boat. The strap should go from the bow eye straight down to the trailer. A set of good transom straps and your good to go.
