Another opinion -
If I was going to use a truck as a daily driver and occasional towing as described, I'd buy a GMC/Chevy for the comfort value and towability. They drive and ride more like a car than Ford does. A 3/4 ton Avalanche is a good compromise with good towing capacity. While I like the looks of a Dodge, all my personal experiences have been negative, so it's not a consideration for us. That said, I've been driving Fords a fairly long time, and will likely stick with them. My F150 with the Triton 5.3 was sold with 165000 on it, and it was still tight and ran great. My current 02 F350 is my daily driver and yet we have towed tremendously with it. It has 160k on the 7.3 powerstroke and auto, and I'd like to sell it and buy a new 06/07 Powerstroke with identical options. Another consideration is a dually will have greater stability than a SRW when towing big stuff. Ford is the only one currently that builds a 1 ton crew cab shortbox. The advantage? Not driving a limo every day. Peter. :) |

There is a reason heavy loads are mostly towed with an inline 6 cylinder diesel motor; it makes more torque at a lower RPM than 8 cylinder diesels. All of the big-rig motors are 6 cylinder diesels. The 5.9L Cummins motor has 30% less moving parts than the 8 cylinder motors of Ford and GM. It is lighter and gets better fuel mileage. Yup, The Cummins alone is reason enough to look at the Dodge- Ford sells more trucks cause they chase the fleet market heavy and the others don't. The truck is nice, the 6.4 is scary, especially after Ford helped IH so much with the 6.0 and look how that turned out. The chevy has a great tranny, rides like a family car (I consider that a negative but respect that some don't) and the cheesy interior seats. Seams like they also have a hard time picking a design theme and sticking with it so they throw everything on the truck (monochromatic with chrome and grey plastic pieces)- the new lines do look good IMHO If you have friends in the used car biz- they'll confirm there are fewer 100k mile Dodges at the auctions and they fetch more $, cause the engines have plenty left and the market knows it. Depending on your situation- this might not matter to you. Get what you like, by an extended warranty if you're concerned about someone's new engine or tranny. Have fun and tow safely. :drink: |

The d max is just starting to busy....they have already run the miles...and I have not heard any real issues...motors are first class....tons of engineering and design= big power outputs when pushed on....real big :evilb:

I just bought a Ford F-250 PSD, So far I like it very much. Much more room in the 4 door than the standard Dodge 4 door.. To match the Ford's room a Mega cab is needed. I was talking with a guy with a '06 ram 3500 Cummins manual trans. He said he got 13mpg hauling his fith wheel camper and gets 19 mpg around town. But while he likes the powertrain he is disapointed with the rest of the trucks construction. For excample he said if rain water gets on the seats when he opens the door it will stain the seats and needs to be worn away. I think Dodge is the best prices truck out there as well.
I don't have much of an opinion with the Chevy's but I havn't heared any complaints about them.And all I ever here is how great that trany is. Here is my new (to me) Ford PSD I just got it last week with 2100 miles on it. Saved a lot of money buying it used. |

I am a firm believer in Dodge and the Cummins engine and so is ford so much so that all of our F-650 trucks have a 5.9L cummins identical to the one in my 2500 under the hood.

I have personally owned the GMC and a couple of Ford 350's. I have never owned the Dodge but I know you can't beat the Cummins engine. The Gmc 3500 dually was the most enjoyable to drive. It had the most comfortable seats and all of the controls seemed to be right at your finger tips. It handled well and had a great ride. Unfortunately my 42' Cig was too much for it. The towing capacity on the GM's is only 12k lbs on the ball mount and I was way over. The frame actually bent and so did the hitch. As much as I liked the truck it just wasn't as tuff as the Ford so I sold it and bought an 05 dually King Ranch with the tow boss. There's a huge difference. The GMC used to sway a lot but the Ford never budges. The steel on the Ford is stronger and so are the components IE the suspension and so forth. I just wish it was more comfortable to drive. The seats suck and the steering feels like something out of a semi. I've since sold the Tiger and bought a Top Gun and have been shopping for a new truck. Now that I don't need the tow boss I wanted to get something more comfortable, like the GM. But I'm still over the legal towing capacity. Too bad you can't take the interior and the tranny from the GM, the engine from the Dodge and put it on the Ford chassis, now that would be a hell of a truck.
