Just got a 382 Fas3Tech and an 07 Chevy 3500 dually to tow it. Truck will be registered in Indiana but I was unsure if we need the License plate to have a gross wieght # of the truck and what it can pull or just the truck. Anyone have an idea? Prolly will just have to talk to the BMV. Also, how can we be sure the truck has a class 5 hitch on it?

Out here, how your register it depends on how bad your personal property tax is assessed. I know in Indiana, you have Excise tax, and pay your vehicle tax when you purchase your plates.

This question is about to become more complex because states are signing new agreements! Currently the U.S has whats called Drivers License Compact (DLC) and the Non-Resident Violator Compact (NRVC).

Under these agreements if your state allows tinted windows and you travel to a state that does not, you are not liable for a ticket if you receive one. Most member states also have excemption clauses that make sections of states licensing code not applicable to out of state drivers and vehicles.

The Drivers License Agreement however is replacing the DLC and NRVC.

So if you plan on towing out of your state you may have to comply with the laws in regards to licensing in the state you are visiting.

basically, your trailer plate and your vehicle plate total weights allowed when combined needs to be equal to or more than the total weight of your truck and whatever you are towing (including gear!) so for instance if you have a 5 thousand pound truck and a ten thousand pound boat , you could have a 8 thousand pound truck plate and a 12000 pound trailer plate and be ok because you are plated for more than you have combined vehicle weights going down the road. most truck stops have scales, stop in and pay your 7 dollars to get weighed to be sure! you can take your total weight and then weigh your truck separately to know exactly what each weighs. keep in mind you could have 2 thousand pounds of fuel if your tanks are big enough so dont skimp on plates! also your vehicle hitch is likely way underclassed to do the job. ford super duty hitch is class V but gm is not last time i checked. you will need to go to master hitch and get the class v. check the internet for the dealer nearest you. also call some that are not in the area because sometimes you can have one mailed to your home from another dealer and then install it yourself or have your local shop install it. i reccomend proffesional installation if you have not done this before. that class 5 is a BEAST. it should have 2000 pound tongue and 12,000 load carrying weight and 14000 load dispersed handling with load bars. get the right hitch. its important. it will have a bigger ball shank as well and will be worry free.

the factory hitch is a 12,000lb , aftermarket ones go 14-18,000 lbs

in nc you must have enough weight onyour truck plate to cover you truck your passenger and cargo plus any thing towed . robbie

I would also check what your divers lisc. is rated to...here in IL the regular lisc. is rated to 16k lbs.....i know a few guys that got busted for not having the proper lisc. when towing their racecar haulers when the combined GVWR of truck and trailer was over the 16k limit.....according tot he cops they need to get a CDL lisc......which to me makes no sense since this is not a commercial application....
