What you hear is the "regeneration" process that Ford built into the new 6.4 - the exhaust system retains particulate matter and then burns it during the regeneration process to reduce emissions. A friend of mine had a customer in Tn. this weekend torch his horse trailer to the ground - fortunately no horses in the trailer. They have a recall out now...but does look pretty cool

Leaking injectors or oil leak from turbo, are the primary cause according to these people. http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/articl...icle-07-01.php
That sure sounds like a diesel injector knock to me, but the sound quality isn't very good either

1100 degree exhaust temps will do that. We can thank Federal Emissions for this. It is incorporated as mtrantum posted in the system. GMs function similarly. That is why the funny looking tail pipe is there.

Just imagine heading out to the field with your trailer in tow for a nice relaxing day of 4-wheeling and accidentally torching the entire field and forrest - that is tree-hugger fight that Ford doesn't want to start - it would be tough to get over the potentially damaging PR. My friend/mechanic fixed the two they had on the lot - but we will have to see... that aside - he is of the opinion that the engine will be good for a legit 1,000 hp once the aftermarket world gets a hold of this thing...
I have to admit - he started one up - popped the hood - I stood at the radiator - he stood off to the side - and we had a conversation without ever raising our voices - unbelievable - couldn't do that around my 7.3
