What viscosity is best for Diesels, I`ve got a 7.3l bought some 5w40 figured it would be better for starting but it seems 15w40 is more common.

Catmando 03-20-2011 07:46 PM

15w40 is the diesel formulation.

Verbi... Use the short stick method when checking your oil to monitor growth. instead of burying the stick back into the tube put it back in the tube but when you get to the yellow portion of the stick let the bottom base stop against the top of the tube. that will make it about an inch shorter and its consistent. you will then be able to read that damn dipstick. normal operating will be a little under half. or a good thing to do is check right after an oil change using the short stick method. do not let it get past the max of the operating range. she needs changed by then. the 6.4 can be great when understood and taken care of. they have a hard time getting oil to the top. also, do not be surprised to see a good amount of smoke when going through a re-gen. its all good. dont freak out. should be a grayish smoke.

Havent put much time in my 6.4 and Just noticed the smoke "grayish" friday. My first thought was WTF!!

5-10 depending on towing and what not. I think closer to 10 is better. Closer to 5 and you are wasting your money. I've actually read that changing your oil to often can hurt your engine because your engine is constantly working harder to break in the new oil

2000 7.3L PSD and I change it at 5K religiously. I run a Napa/Wix Gold filter, and my oil is black when I change it.
