New dodge H.D. 3500 cummins 4+4 mega

Anyone got a new one with the bigger motor??????? If so what do you think of the pulling power, inside cab , ect ?? I'm looking at the new f-450 and the dodge but don't have much to go on about the dodge . The ford looks to be doing really good . Any input would be great ! Thanks for any help !!!

dra200832 07-17-2011 11:25 PM

Stay away from the f-450 lots of problems. There r some threads on here of u look. Cummins is the way to go for pulling an great deals on Dodge now if I'm not mistaken.

Dodge

Dodge all the way The only heavy duty that does not require urea tank. Ford makes a great product but for heavy towing nothing beats a Cummins We are at 5,000 feet plus and can feel the difference in the mountains plus an exhaust brake is standard I am a Doge dealer let me know if I can help.

I just picked one up on Friday. The High Ouput refers to the torque rating which is now 800 ft-lbs at 1500 rpm. I also don't really need a large bed so I went with the Mega Cab. The Laramie interior is very comfortable and there is a ton of room. My kids are over 6'4" and have plenty of room in the back seat. I tow a 353 FastTech and I can't even feel it. Also, the motor is much quieter than the previous models.

soldier4402 07-18-2011 07:32 AM

I think some guys are mistaken about the dodge. Nice truck but they are not the leader of the pack. Go with F450 or a chevy. I would never buy a dodge, only thing good in it is the engine. How much weight are you pulling. If your only at like ten grand a F450 is a waste of money.

In my Opinion the best truck would be a Cummins engine, Chevy body and tranny and a ford frame.

FIXX 07-18-2011 06:12 PM

in order to get the newer ho engine make sure the build date is after 6-11..2012 have the newer engine..after seing all the problems with the fords in the last 7 years i wouldnt think about buying a dodge..the brakes are bigger and better the emmision less uera tank is a big plus,,just saw my neighbor with his, he use to be a ford guy then after talking to him into the dodge he said im never looking back..he just turned 400k on his and the truck is loaded to 15k every day of the week..

funny story,,i have a friend that is a ford diesel tech,he drives a 06 dodge mega cab with the cummins..

This thread is just a bunch of opionons.

You almost can't go wrong just pick the truck you like. I own a Dodge and I really like it. The trans is fine assuming you don't drive like a *******. The main reason I went with the Dodge was the price tag.

The Chevy is probably my overall favorite. It will produce excellent power and easily be the most comfortable.

The Ford is a great truck also, the compound turbos they have on them produce a lot of back pressure and don't perform well at elevation but still a great truck.

Just go with the own you like the most.

LOL, i can't wait to see your boat, but on a serious note, I love the look of the Dodge HD truck. I think that would be a great choice. I just saw a Ford F450 Dually today, and that looked great too. It looked like it wanted to pull a Skater , LOL...:drink:

Just rode in my friends HO 800lb/ft. Amazing! I thought my new 2010 was awesome but somehow this one is even better. Tons of power great ride amazing interior. I was really impressed with the A/C leather seats. BUY ONE you will be happy!

575cat 07-19-2011 10:06 AM

which one would you really trust on the open road or a long trip ? I would go with the dodge , but then again I own one , have heard to many horror stories on the other 2 .

You are so right, all are good trucks. But like I said earlier Dodge is not the leader of the pack. But you have to factor in price, towing, etc. I will say this if you are getting a 350 or 450 dually whatever brand, thats a lot of towing power, and if you are towing under 10k both of those trucks are a huge waste of money.

do the searches on the 6.0 6.4 fords ,its endless , now that the factory warranties are running out or have run out allot of these people are getting caught with theyre pants down . I tell my customers and people I know if your going to buy a diesel chevy or dodge do not leave the lot without an extended warranty , and some times that wont cover it .Had a customer buy a 6.0 ford and got the extended warrany , a month later the EGR cooler blew and was not covered because it was attached to the engine and nort part of the engine ? but your right the trans will always be the week link, allot has to do with the opperator .

The 6.0 which is the world's first diesel powered coolant pump is a massive piece of crap. The 6.4 though is a good motor, some of them do occasionally puke but it is a good motor.

I had a 2006 with a standard trans. I ran that truck for 40,000 miles makeing around 740hp and 1700 ft pounds. I did replace the clutch but the trans held up well. The motor also held 90 pounds of boost hundreds of times on just head studs.

Yup 6.0 is junk specially from 02-03 to 2005. 06-07 werent bad. 6.4 is not junk and never heard anything bad about them yet.

For what its worth buddy has a 10 Ram hemi, been in 2-3 times already and tranny humms

But what was said above about warranties is good advice with a diesel. Me personally regardless of brand I will always have a powertrain warranty on a diesel whether it be factory or extended. You pay twice the money for diesel parts and 20% more on labor charges. Alot of diesels require special tools and knowledge to fix them, its not like a chevy 1500 where you and some friends can sit in the driveway on a saturday with a 12 pack and figure something out.

575cat 07-19-2011 11:27 AM

supposedly the 6.4 has weeker interalls than the 6.0 . the 6.4 has 2 egr coolers, not good and they puke , when the 6.4 breaks it beaks bigtime . got to get rid of the DPF and turn off the EGR that will greatly help ! did a 08 450 crew cab dump box truck weighs 13.500 empty the thing was allways in regen got rid of the DPF put in the H&S perf box which also turns of the EGR now he says he has been getting 13 + empty plus it will leave 4 black marks ! turning off the EGR will also stop the internal palution and dilution of the engine .

The EGR / DPF stuff goes for all the trucks.

Yep, I really don't understand the idea behind decreasing mpg that much for really no emission improvment. I have a 2011 H&S sponsered my truck for an article in diesel world mag. After taking all that crap off the truck still doesent smoke at all.

Wildman_grafix 07-19-2011 12:22 PM

Why would you compare the new Dodge to the older ford 6.4?

The new one is a 6.7, from this thread most seem to like it.

If this is your truck, then I am extremely jealous. I read that article and thought that was the sickest truck that I would ever want to own.

Now the question, what boat do you pull with it because I am sure it will look great behind it and pull it with no problem.

I am a member on CF as well and haven't heard of any issues. I own a 11' 2500 6.7L with H&S Mini Maxx, 5" turbo back, intake and it is always running on "Hot"..........it hasn't skipped a beat.

i own a 2010 dodge 3500. i love the new style and interior much improved over the older ones... I have 28000 miles towing a toy hauler and my boat no issues what so ever. all the egr/emission crap is where alot of the issues come from and they all have em. just by the one YOU like and you'll be fine IMO.

Opinions in the HD or SD Truck arena are like A$$holes ... everyone has one. An endless supply :) Everyone knows someone that had an issue once with something and it's time to Henny Penny the whole fleet.

Truth is as stated by others; if you are buying into one of the big three you wont go to wrong. It is a very close market space and for some reason the competion is huge. Look at the HP and Torque #'s this year ...... 400HP and 800 ft. lbs. They are always pretty close to each other.

I own a 2011 F250 SD with the new 6.7 Diesel in it. Love it, great truck. The GM and the Dodge are also nice and very capable. Two key points or suggestions; properly match what you will be towing to the capabilities of the truck., i.e you dont need an f450 to pull 10K. The costs to operate will be higher as will the licensing fees and inspections required. Last point .... whatever you buy do not own any current diesel truck without an extended warranty plan. Enjoy whatever you get!
