that ford is a bad ass tow unit . thats the stuff I am looking for . the things a boater like me or others that builds there own tow unit . not gooffy, autrageous stuff ,

twin ob , I just went back and reread your post about the convertable car as a tow unit . years ago every body towed with regular cars , that was the norm . I towed with a 73 comet , 71 torino 74 ltd , no disrespect intended at all . I built my e450 on a super tight budget . 2003 E450 retired ambulance $3000, 2004 retired peterbuilt 72 inch sleeper $1000 , flat bed 8 x 8 (new) never sold 6 year old $400 , 12000 lbs trailer hitch off craigs list $30 , used leather seats (nice) $50 , fridg from a 2005 formula 35 fastec never used , $100 , portapotty from previous boat , Free , 2 new storage boxes on sides $350 , I could go on and on but you get the picture I'm sure . I'v got a $50000 super duty to tow with but I wanted something different . I didn't need it , just wanted it. Tim also ,what part of Ohio were you from ?

My dad used to tow our 21' Galaxy POS 150 miles each year with a 1970's Galaxy 500. I don't think anyone ever talked about tow ratings back then :eekdrop: Before that, everyone had a Country Squire wagon. Of course, 23' was a Big boat back then ;) But I'll bet many weighed a lot more than today's pleasure boats do.

I have no data, but I'll also bet that the pickups of that era has puny tow ratings as well. God knows what the drum brakes were capable of then :eekdrop:

1969 Formula 233 / 1971 Cutlass Sedan with the Olds 350
1974 John Allmand 28 / 1978 Mercury Stationwagon / Ford 400m
1976 Bertram 28 / 1974 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with Olds 455

My first boat when I was 18 was a Pirahna 24 and I towed it with my 1971 Olds 442 W30 with the W30 spec Olds 455 and a turbo 400 tranny

Back then (70s) pickemups were for farms and construction workers,
noone thought a pickup was "cool".

My parents and their freinds with similiar boats and tow vehicles use to take trips to
the Keys,the Gulf, etc, towing sometimes 300-400 miles each way. They never lost control,
never hit anyone, never broke down, none of the things that everyone says will happen
if you dont use a semi to tow your boat..
Maybe its not that vehicles are better today but that drivers were so much better back then.
Instead of relying on the vehicle to do their job they actually used their driving skills..

When we were in high school and skiing a ton my friends brother had a 1978 silver anniversary corvette, and a matching Ski Nautique. When we would load we had made a drive on trailer and would "Push" the vette with the boat a bit to get us up the ramp.
