I have an 04 2500 crew cab (non hd) 4x4 6.0 with 108,xxx. It unfortunately has 3.73's opposed to the 4.10's which makes it a pig. I get maybe... 11 mpg on average

I'm planning on a gear change soon

The air actuators fail all the time

Just spent 7300 on an 07 duramax. Replaced inj. pump, injectors, fuel rails, the whole 9 yards. Seems chevrolet had a bulletin out on the problem and 2007 was one of the year models. They had ceramic ball valves in the injector pump and when they start coming apart they stop up everything. I have owned 6 different duramax and currently own 3. It may sound stupid but I wouldn't own anything else. I would stay away from the 07 classic unless all of that has already been fixed as you can see it is pricey.

I had a 2002 then a 2004 lly, one of our work trucks now is a 2006 lbz and I love it. My 2000 6.0 was a total gas pig, my 2003 8.1 crew cab I recently sold got better mileage then my 6.0 did.

Jason, just buy one that has had the injectors done already, be prepared for a typical small repair here and there. Buy a used programmer off Ebay cheap, there are TONS of them around and then turn it up, you will be VERY happy. I have had a 02, 04, 06 and now my 08 Duramax 4x4 crew cab and loved everyone of them. My 02 and 04 with the old motors and Allison with one less gear actually got the best mileage empty when flying down the highway, I could get 18.5-19 mpg at 90mph empty with programmer turned up. My 08 with dpf delete, full exhaust and programmer will get 21-22 mpg at 56 mph driving steady babying it, at 90 however (empty) it gets about 13.5 , Smitty

There is a recall on those, my 04 1500 just got the a/c fan switch replaced for free.

Thanks everyone. If I do not find a good deal on a LB7 in the next month I will probably have saved enough to buy an LLY. I was not going to buy an LB7 that had not had the injectors recently replaced. Have the new LB7 replacement injectors been upgraded at all over the years?

Also what programmer do you guys prefer, or is that like asking what's faster Fountain vs Outerlimits???

The mileage for the 8100 can be helped a ton with a good tune. I did a better intake, exhaust, removed cats. I have 4.10 gears and a 4L80E tranny in my Avalanche 2500. I get better mileage than all my friends with a 6.0L until i hit the highway.......12-13 MPG above 65 mph and 15-16 MPG below 65 mph. I have the trans hitting lock up whenever it can and lowering all the shift points except for WOT. Drives almost like a diesel and has great torque down low. Roughly 375 crank HP now. I have the MAG HO cam sitting on the shelf waiting to go in. GM never gave these motors a chance from the git go. Stock program actually ran extremely lean at WOT....that is why ones that got worked hard drank oil or need rebuilds. Mine was 15.7 AFR @ WOT during the first run on dyno........liked it best around 11.7 @WOT. Also set fuel enrichment to not come in until 3000 rpm. That helped a bunch with highway towing mileage. I kept getting into enrichment mode running highway speeds with the low gearing.

I also had an 07.5 LMM Dmax. Great truck once I did the DPF delete and added Quadzilla Stealth 2 tuner. That is a fantastic tuner for the money.....great power and great mileage. I was 452 rwhp and 803 rwtq and got 15 city and 18-19 highway mpg. HAve set up a few friends trucks with the Quadzilla stuff.....you gain exactly what they clam...no BS.

EFI Live from a quality tuner will usually be the best tune. You can also get a DSP 2 or 5 switch and have more tunes loaded. EX. stock, 40hp tow, 80hp hot, and maybe a valet that is detuned.
Edge would be my second choice.
The Edge Insight is a nice electronic readout visibility tool regardless of what tuner is used. It does add another $400 but may keep you from blowing a motor with high egt's or limping the allison as it reads slip.

Funny the other two mentioned, Bully Dog and Quadzilla are two of the cheaper, dirtier tuners out there by many people's experience.

Not to hijack a diesel thread but sounds like a nice set up you got on the Avalanche. Would love to see some pics. Got any?
