Hit and miss reviews on the V-10 Fords. The early ones were terrible; known to shoot spark plugs out of the block going down the highway. They seem to be OK for locals and non-towing applications. I'd never own one.

I have a 2001 V-10 F-350 as our shop truck(Body Shop).Runs amazing.You just need to swallow the fuel bills.We pulled the exhaust manifolds and replaced all the studs,as well as new plugs.Always Never Seize the plugs in a Ford.If you do buy the truck,do the plugs even if its not time.You'll be glad you did.Have had the truck for about 6 years and wouldn't ever think to sell it .

I do believe that ford will need a signature/waiver prior to any tuneups due to the spark plug issues- if it snaps off while they are completing the work, you can either payup or you might end up leaving with a v7

As far as I know the plugs snapping off is not a big deal anymore. I guess when they snap upon removal, there is now an extractor tool that pull out the broken piece. I have also heard that if the plugs were replaced once, the ones put in will probably be one piece and not break upon removal.

Alot of "he said, she said, my friends friends cousins brother has a V10" Lol. I do have a excursion with a v10 now have also had a 250 crew with a V10 and both with the 7.3. The V10 IMO is way better as far as drivabilty. The 7.3 are SLOW, period. Gas mileage was and is low of 9 and have gotten 13.5mpg on highway. Keep in mind this is with 10" lift and 38" tires as well. Pulling my 36 spectre, 8-9mpg. If your towing long distances, or almost all the time, go for the diesel, otherwise the V10 may be the way to go..

I have a 02 Excursion with V-10, 60k on it, haul my 38 PQ with it. Best ever was 13 on expressway. Put something behind it it drops to 8 or 9. You have no idea you are pulling anything, great rig. You just don't pass very many gas stations.

No complaints hear. '02 F350 with near 200k on it. Drove it from Edmonton AB to Minneapolis to pick up the 380, then through to Toronto (actaully 2 hours east of T.O.), then back out to B.C. through the Rockies.
Truck never even hiccupped. I drove it around the city until I sold it...too many vehicles and got a company vehicle.
I would buy another if I needed one.

X2- The Big Block Chevy has tremendous volumetric efficiency. The big bore long stroke gives you a great torque curve and that's why we love them in our boats and our trucks. Even though the 8.1 is a bigger displacement engine it uses about the same fuel as the V10- maybe even slightly better in some cases. The Ford V10 makes its power above 3000 rpm. The 8.1 has torque down at 2000 rpm.

+1....I had an '01 F-350 CC with the V-10 in it about 8 years ago and I really liked it a lot. I am a diesel guy now, but as far as drivability goes the V-10 was great. I thought it pulled really well when I put it to the test. 11-12 mpg in town and 13-14 on the highway driving really conservative. Pulling I ware in between 8.5-9.5 mpg I had it straight piped and it sounded kind of like an indy car. A lot of people made fun of how it sounded, but i thought it sounded cool. I'd go for it if you can float the gas.
