I do love the older trucks! But I hate no overdrive and I am not sure it's worth the money to do an overdrive conversion in it. I am thinking of doing the same as you, selling it in favor of an early 2000 model!
This isn't the first square Chevy I have modified! This was my first 1/2 ton i owned. Actually bought my first 502 crate engine for this truck which now lives happily in my jet boat!
And then some of my other projects before I got into boats

Sweet! Nice rigs...
I can tell ya, the white 97 I bought is so much more refined than the 89. Quiet, cruises nicely at 65-70mph, and got 13.4mpg driving it home from Kentucky. Pulled my buddys 42 Fountain very nicely. The vortec engine pulls a lot better than the old peanut port 454. Plus 4Low at the launch ramp is a bonus. The 2wd red truck on certain ramps sounded like it was gonna melt the converter getting the boat up.
