My buddy just bought a Excursion Powerstroke for $2800......truck has satellite tv/ 5 TV's and was a soccer mom vehicle. Truck needed nothing but it does have 230K on the clock.....cold a/c, recent Michelins and all the TVs work! Good service history, lady traded it for a new Mercedes SUV.

The boat review said it was also great for needing to make a 90deg turn as the rear wheels act similar to a forklift in getting the trailer tongue to move quick.

I'll have to look if it was available for an 8.1. Sure would be nice over the city block it takes to turn my long bed, 4dr F350 (rated worst radius out of any of them).
Yes, 2500 Suburban (maybe Yukon XL, can't remember) only, but only with the 6.0L; not with the 8.1L. They didn't know what the torque of the 8.1L would do to the funky rear axles.
Notice the fender clearance lights and clearance light on the roof; akin to a dually; as set by US Federal width laws.
Buddy has a Silverado 1500HD with it.
Local pizza delivery guy has a Silverado Extended Cab which is a stripped version of the Sierra Denali pickup which had QuatraSteer as well. A Denali version of the Yukon XL 2500 would be the cats-ass. I think they were rated to tow 9000 or 10,000 lbs. I almost bought the Sierra Denali

My thread from when I was researching back in 2002:
http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/g...s-2500-hd.html

I bought the 2500 Avalanche new in 2002; and sold it in favor of an F-350; 7.3L CC LB DRW with the leaf spring front suspension.

The Excursion will not turn much better than your F-350 with since the leaf springs limit the front tire swing and turning radius.

6.0L or 7.3L?
4x4?

7.3L? He got a smoking deal.
6.0L? Hope he has $8K in the bank.

Quadrasteer was not available w/ 8.1, but not necessary IMO.

With 8.1, pretty sure 3.73 is 10k towing, 17k GCWR and 4.10 is 12k towing, 19k GCWR if that matters to you.

I think the Yukon XL 2500 tows pretty well, figure 10-12 everyday and 6-8 towing in the real world and it is a great daily driver.
It is way, way easier to maneuver than a CC long bed, with and without the trailer. I know this from personal experience, I daily drove my XL 2500 and liked everything about it except the defroster sucked and so did the fuel bill. It's an absolute beast in the snow, if you can see through the ice on the windshield. I had no major problems in 100,000 miles other than typical GM electrical BS. I would look for an 05 or 06 w/ 4.10's from down south if buying another.

1 more thing:

1500 Anything GM: Coil-spring rear suspension. REALLY BAD for towing.

Bringing up the OSO WAY BACK machine:
This was how member Madcow started out:
http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/g...-avalache.html
This is how he ended up, towing overloaded with crap aftermarket wheels and rubberband tires:
http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/g...-avalanch.html

2500 GM: Leaf Spring Rear suspension. 10X better for towing.

Until last year we owned a 2003 2500 Suburban with the 6.0/3.73 4x4 and towed a 31 Formula fastech for a couple years. It was fine but all I wanted to tow with that truck. (bought a 382 and towed once/twice with it and immediately bought a dually). I agree with what has been said, the 2500 is much improved over the 1500 and you want the 8.1. The gas mileage difference is actually 1 mpg or less but it has 95 ft/lbs more torque. (We got 12-13 mpg mixed driving in "suburbia" and 9-10 towing that 312).

It appears as though you are right. My mistake. I'll edit my post.

Good input on the 8.1 vs the 6L, that will likely narrow the search a bunch.

What about the V10 Excursion? Basically giving those away at $5k!
i had both and kept my 92 suburban..the excursion i had was a 7.3 diesel all stock,,i did not like the ride when towing,,it was a teeder tauder,,i sold it in 2005 and yes i gave it away for 15k..then i bought a yukon xl 2500 with a 8.1 ..towed alot better then the excursion but it would never pass a gas pump..could not deal with the 8mpg when towing,i also was uncomfortable driving it on long trips..sold it...i bought my suburban in 1994,,its beed a good vehicle and with all the miles on it i thought it would leave me stranded and thats why i bought the excursion and yukon xl...470k on it now and will still peal the tires off the rims and its decent on fuel for a 454 tbi and the seats are vary comfee,,still...

[QUOTE=fantastixvoyage;4032985]Well looks like this post about sums it up....
this addy is over 2 months old....also when looking at the yukon xl pay attension the the drivers seat,,you will seee on alot of them that gm used cheap leather and they ware real quick and crack..
"there are 2 V10s. A 2 valve and a 3 valve. i think they switched to 3valve in 02 or 03. The 2 valve had a lot of ploblems i have heard of people shooting sparkplugs and valves through the hood. The 3Valve is more reliable but still with a 6.8L V10 gas milage is S***. My buddy has one and it chuggs gas and it sounds like a mustang with no balls and it has a dual mbrp 4in with no cats. Im not an expert tho. My advice is nothing works like a diesel."

t
he 5.4 3 valve motors have broken spark plug issues,,meaning they brake off in the cylinder head when you go to remove them..
Never realized the v10 was actually such a small motor (only 6.8L). Guess the Yukon XL, 8.1 liter, quadra steer might be the way to go. Found a bunch of 2500s and not a one has the 8.1L...looks like the hunt is on...

yes quad steer was a option one year,,think it was 2003 or 04..
