I don`t know what I was thinking you guys changed my mind, this 8.1l is awesome !! I let of the gas and it keeps accelerating uphill, the gas gauge doesn`t show the first number so that 6mpg is actually 16mpg! I love this thing!
In 1985 they didn`t have any cell phones either that don`t mean I`m going to be looking for a phone booth anytime soon. Hold on let me get my 1985 drill so I can add some gauges to the dash http://www.photo-dictionary.com/phot...hand_drill.jpg |
I think you`re taking it it completely the wrong way , I should have quoted Mild Blunder he knows I`m giving him $hit and 99% not serious. :D

What stunned me was that the truck burned $39,000 in diesel fuel in 8 years! Granted it idled a lot in the summer and 80%+ of the miles were in town but I spent more in fuel than I paid for the truck new! If I was buying new HD pickup the miles/fuel economy math would be part of the equation for sure (in addition to how it was being used and how often). |
I really wasnt trying to start a which is better, gas or diesel debate. There is no question a 2015 800ft lb cummins powered ram would run circles around my old pos chevy in every way. It was just an observation that I've noticed that alot of guys think a gas engine, is INCAPABLE of towing a large boat. My buddy BZ has been towing his 42 Fountain all over for years with his V10 Ford dually. I been towing my boat around for the past 5 years with gas duallys.
Will a high powered modern diesel pull better, of course. But, a 2015 Ram, with an 800FT lb cummins, is a far cry from a 1999 7.3 Ford, 5.9 cummins with their ****t trannies, or the early duramax's. Ive come across mainly the guys with the old diesels, who have the "its a diesel, it'll pull anything " attitude. The fuel mileage stuff, alot of that is pure BS. When I had my trucks pcm reprogrammed, they compensated for my tire size. My speedo is dead nuts with my GPS. When I did this recent 900 mile trip, every tank full, every mile, every gallon of fuel used, was hand calculated to give me my 7.9 MPG figure. I was not figuring my MPG over 30 miles of flat road, coasting downhill and resetting the MPG meter, or going off what the computer 'thinks' my mpg is. Ive found even on brand new trucks, the speedo is not even that accurate. If your traveling 65mph, but your speedo shows 67mph, your fuel numbers will be skewed to the high side.If your speedo shows 65mph, but your really doing 68mph, again, your fuel numbers will be skewed, but to the low side. Hand calculated coming from kentucky to chicago not towing, I got 13.4mpg. The average tank around town, I get around 10-11. When I say around town, I mean around downtown chicago area. Not living out in a small rural town, where I'm traveling roads at 45mph with a stop light every 6 miles. Talking about stoplights every 3 blocks. My truck wouldnt be a great daily driver getting 10-11mpg empty thats for sure. But, I simply dont drive it every day, its main purpose to be in the garage is to simply get the boat to the water. |
When I bought my first diesel, diesel was cheaper than regular by a significant amount. Of course, that flipped and went the other way about a month later. Still, once I owned a diesel, I couldn't go back. I tried once and sold the truck 6 months later. It was the same thing with having a standard cab, then an extended cab, then a crew cab. Once I went bigger, there was no going back to smaller.

I did the opposite . I had gas V10 ford then bought a new 6.0L Ford. Owned the diesel for 5 years. Sold it and went back to gas after all the motor issues I had with it. I'm a do it yourselfer and hated the fact I couldn't work on my own trucks engine besides doing an oil change. My 6.0L pretty much ruined my diesel powered personal vehicle taste. Prob unfair to all the other engines because I know there are some great reliable diesel pickups out there.
I drive a semi for a living, my 454 pulling my boat will out accelerate my semi all day. I'm used to hauling heavy loads and not setting speed records. Plus not having to bang gears in my dually makes it a dream to operate vs a semi truck. Listening to a class 8 diesel 10 hours a day, dealing with the nasty diesel fuel pumps and smells, it's nice getting away from that when the weekend comes. Although my buddy's 2014 cummins 2500 ram is really quiet, and overall a really nice truck. Wouldn't mind getting into a new truck like his in a year or two. I just want no part of the diesels from 10 years ago. Heck on cold winter mornings I'd have my mack semi warming up next to my 6.0L warming up. The 6.0L was actually making more racket then the engine twice it's size next to it. |
One day I~m going to own a brand new Dually, live in Florida, have my boat in my back yard and be a boat captain for a living.. :D One day!

Hey wait,,,,, I have a old oil burner! 1996 with mods.
Easy they aren't all bad but before mods it did leave a lot to be desired. Biggest reason I don't change is cost, paid for and I don't use it much, 125k on it. No cold weather warm ups here. |
