You need a tuner to delete. Most tunes also turn off the EGR so removing that is not as critical.

You can get a Dpf-r which is only about 400 bucks and delete pipes can be found all over for less than 100. They take about a half hour to remove the old pipe.

Personally I went with H&S tuner because it also functions as a monitor, has shift on the fly and limitless tuning options for both engine and transmission which is about 1500. There are options in between such as spartan and SCT that would be less than 1000.

Also, you should never shut it off when it's cleaning the Dpf. That soaks the cylinders down in diesel fuel.

I went with Spartan.

But it was before H&S really caught on.

Both units are great, but I like the fact that Spartan came with a DashDaq

H&S for the customized tuning by a reputable shop, Gearhead or innovative. Trucks drive so much better & lil to no smoke. The Cav plate issue was in the 08's, they have a revised front cover now. You'll get better MPG deleting & tuning but nothing to be excited about.

I went from a best of 17.5 MPG on trips hand calculated to a best of 22.3 MPG running the Spartan 275 tune. That's pretty significant.

I was running factory 18" wheels with that. Since I switched to 20" wheels, I lost all my mileage gains.

jmoore1225 12-20-2014 04:04 PM

Do you have 3.55's & a 6 speed or drive under 60mph? I know of people w/ several 6.4's & no one even gets 15mpg. Best I've got is 14mpg running 75-80mph.

j21black 12-20-2014 04:23 PM

3.55 Gears, 5 speed Transmission, and I run 9mph over the speed limit always.

Made the trip from Charlotte, NC to Mount Vernon, IN on a single tank without stopping on 18" wheels. With the 20's I have to stop around Hopkinsville, KY and get fuel. This is straight Interstate driving. All in, everyday driving I'm probably 15MPG or less.

Also I'm running what is considered the most fuel efficient tune out there, or was when I was keeping up with that stuff.

I would have lost it after dropping 2k for a tuner, pipe, and new air box and only got under 15MPG.

If your running 20's, that may be the cause. Mine dropped off to untuned numbers when I went with bigger wheels.

I assume that's hand calculated? If it's off the lie-o-meter it's a bs number. I rarely see mare than 15-16 at 70mph

BUP 12-20-2014 07:15 PM

Stock form I see 13 on the hwy. have 275-65-20 tires I hate the mileage this gets compared to others.

tsatrooper1 12-20-2014 08:50 PM

Never trust the lie o meter. Hand calculated only. The mpg calculation is based of the torque reading in the pcm which is way off when you throw 300 rwhp to it. I once had a ford engineer agree with me that a dpf/egr delete is the only way to make a 6.4 live. Thanks epa. Dealers and ford have to proove 100% with out a doubt the tuner caused the failure which is well.....close to impossible.
