I have a 10 speed in my F350/ 7.3 gas truck. I wonder if it's the same?

I haven't felt anything strange but I do NOT drive in ego mode, did hear from one guy at the Ford dealership that said when he put his in that mode it really skips gears like Knot said. So far I am happy with my choice and with the gasser.

A colleague of mine has one in an F150, and he doesn’t like it. It hasn’t failed or given him any real problems, but he doesn’t like how it feels and shifts. I have not experienced anything that I would describe as out of place. I can tell you that, when you put the befall to the firewall, I goes though a short committee meeting as it downshifts, then plants your head on the headrest.

So far, I’m impressed. I can accelerate moderately getting on the highway and reach 80MPH without exceeding 2000RPM, and it will cruise at 80MPH at about 16-1700 RPM.

We are heading to Cumberland this afternoon (I think), where we left the boat last weekend. We will hitch it up in the morning and head to the ramp and see how it does around town. We’ll be bringing it back to Dayton Sunday, so we’ll get to put it through it’s paces on the highway. I am not anticipating any issues.

Thanks. Brad.

I'll preface my responses with former management at Ford Motor Company and now with General Motors. I'm not brand loyal at all.

The ten speed was a joint venture between GM and Ford but there are some differences inside between the brands. The transmission will get better as it learns your driving patterns if you drive it consistently the same. If it's any reassurance, I'm running over 700whp on pump gas in a new Mustang I had built for myself while at Ford and it has a stock transmission in it with no issues whatsoever. It'll be fine in your truck.

The ten speed in your truck is different and has a much higher torque rating like the 10 speed in the diesels. Your transmission should go several hundred thousand miles behind the 7.3 gas engine without issues.

Guys,

I just towed the boat back to Cumberland from Dayton, and I can report it did fantastic. It crushed the "Cut in the Hill" that everybody talks about: I-75, south of the Ohio River, heading into northern KY. In our Avalanche, we were lucky to maintain 35MPH, with the engine singing along at 3500-4000 RPM, while semis were passing us. This new truck kept up with traffic at 50+, and never got above about 2500 RPM. I could have easily pulled harder, but was limited by the traffic. The truck does so well that I may have inadvertently contributed to the early demise of one of the axle seals on the trailer. I kept finding myself at 85MPH on flatter stretches of I-75; something I could have never dreamed of doing with the Avalanche. The boat and trailer are currently at Hilltop Marine, getting new axle seals and (potentially) bearings.

One thing it does not do well is manage the cruise control on rolling hills. It seems to wait to long to react to the changing load at the bottom of hills, as it starts up the next. If I'm running along at 75MPH on cruise, when it starts up the a hill, it will be down to 67-68 MPH before it starts really pulling. It has plenty of muscle to pull it back up to 75MPH, but it has downshifted several times, and is above 4K RPM in doing so. Whereas, if I'm on the pedal, I can lay into it a bit as we transition from downhill to up, and I can maintain that 75MPH with only one downshift, and never break about 2500RPM. I may have to try using cruise, but stay on the pedal, to "coach" the cruise through the valleys. That should keep my below 80, at least.

All-in-all, we love the truck, even if it is considerably thirstier than my HHR as a daily driver.

Thanks. Brad.

I looked at the 6.2 but went with the baby duramax. Congrats on the new vehicle!

All-in-all, we love the truck
Great news!

but it has downshifted several times
But, your only gripe is the transmission? Uh oh..........

Techman,

Honestly, I think it’s more the committee that governs the cruise control, not the transmission. The transmission is just doing what it’s told to, and is doing it well. As I said, if I’m taking care of the throttle myself, it only down shifts once.

Thanks. Brad.

Sorry....I was just yanking your chain. Sounds like a great truck for your needs. Those self learning transmission curves are a pain until they get to know your driving style.

Hey Brad, you might wanna disconnect the battery for a good 30min to clear the trans learning memory and start fresh with it learning your own driving style...just saying ...the computers are always adapting but if its got a baseline on it from the previous owner then who knows how they drove it and if its shifting the best based on your driving styles...

Wally,

Noted. Honestly, I wasn't even aware of the adaptive learning function.

But, honestly, I'm not sure it's worth the effort. I haven't really found anything I've found as out of place, as far as how it shifts. Literally my ONLY complaint is how it reacts to the transition from downhill to up in the hills of KY, giving up way too much speed before it then pours the coals to it. It's more reactionary than maintaining, and I think that's coming from the processor for the cruise control, not the transmission itself. If I stay in it myself through that transition, it does fine. Other than that, I'm pretty content with its behavior.

For the record, I haven't found an "ECO" mode. All I've found so far is "normal", "sport" and "offroad". And, of course, trailering mode. I haven't spent a ton of time discovering the various operational features, though, so.... I did take the time to strip the "4X4" stickers off the side of the bed, though. Minimalist in me, and all....

Thanks. Brad.

Not sure on the 10spds but on my 2010 Avy with the 6spd...if I'm cruising along at lets say 70mph and coming up to a hill....if i quickly twitch my foot on the throttle (not flooring it just maybe a movement of about 1") the truck can be made to downshift to the next lower gear without skipping multiple gears to really hit hard like it would do if i had cruise control set. If im towing, i use cruise when its flat...when im comin up on a hill i turn it off and use my foot...just before the hill starts i twitch my foot to go down one gear and she trucks right along just fine....i don't let cruise control run up hill...it waits too long then it jumps down like 2-3 gears depending on my speed going into it...i don't like that
