Re: 1980 30' Velocity - Redo in progress

Here's more detail.... I got the boat as it is right now having sat for at least 10 years. One of the 355 sbc's had blown and the other was pulled for a hot rod. It went well over a hundred with that setup.

It now has some stocker 350's in it. I haven't even attempted to fire them but they look like they are all there. I'm hoping to make it run with this power but not yet sure. Once it hits the water, it will be back to the drawing board looking for new and more SERIOUS power. I'll probably stick with sbc's since it has a lot of very good parts on it already (exhaust, intakes, pulleys, etc....).

I just baught two stainless drop down seat frames... really want to provide access to cabin and finish it (bare now). Also need some rear seating... has to become a bit more pratical for the wife to buy in.

Tripps... I just met a guy in FLA with an 81 and twin 250 Evenrude 4 strokes. Cool boat. All white...

He has some connections at the factory and tells me there were only 11 made in 81!!! I'd bet even fewer in 80 (that's mine).

use 383's,400 hp x 2 = 800=80 mph??? i hope ! 10 horse=1mph,my magnum had 680 went 70!! all old stuff,theory might work,maybe tripps

Tripps,
If I can make it go that fast with a few 400hp smallblocks I'll be dancing :evilb: :evilb: .

How fast is yours with the three 200's? Any pics of it or your buddy's?

My buddy in FLA with 2X250 goes about 68 so we might be talking a better ratio then you think!

tripps 11-15-2006 07:25 PM

Re: 1980 30' Velocity - Redo in progress

I go 70 with 600 hp,if they are makin 200 each,i have pic's but i have diffuclty postin pics,my friends io one is all yellow and says velocitoy on the side. according to Bblades im runnin 9.8 % slip so im not touchin it. Im quite sure your buddy's 30 with 2 250's is probally better, only 2 gearcases in the water vs my 3 so,i dont know, but im usin what i got, when i cant find any more stock 200 power heads,i'll consider something else, but im haveing cheap fun now and can do mostly everything myself    no marina bills :evilb: ill try to post some pic's tripps

With a solid 800hp it should run every bit of 80. I had an 88' with stock 330's and it was a solid 75 mph boat. We would turn 26" 4-blades Hydromotives around 5100 with light fuel. Plus with small blocks, you're going to weigh less too. ;)

The 30' is a great boat. With the right amount of trim, it will get up on the pad like a small outboard V-bottom.

There's also a guy down here in FL with I believe an 83' with outboards. His name is Tom, he had the real nice 22' that was completely redone and sold a couple of months back.

Re: 1980 30' Velocity - Redo in progress

Ok, I've started to dig in a bit. The cockpit has been completely gutted. The wood frame of the bolster was quite weak so it had to go. I wanted two seats up front and access to the cabin anyway. With some batteries hooked up, the dash comes to life and both engines turn over (after a little pre-lube). I haven't put any fuel to it yet and think I'll pull the Holley's apart first to at least inspect.

Next step, cut the dash back to its original location as it has been moved back about a foot.

Anyone have access to some good throttle/drive controls? I'd like to upgrade to something a little newer style.

I need a hatch for the cabin too...

I'm pretty sold on the idea of a couple 383's. I think I can build good ones (dart heads, forged internals, etc...) pretty reasonably. It would be tough to put it in and go 45mph!

Oh well, back to Ebay to collect stuff I'll be needing.

PM Me what you need I have some throttles and shifters as well as some other parts I might even have a entry door set up from the factory for my 320 Velocity.

Well, I'm glad I poked my head in here when I did!

The boat's VIN is VMX32056080H

Tha boat was originally purchased from Velocity by Jessop (Jay) Smith and was raced as "Putt-Putt" to a national championship. When he replaced the boat a few years later with a 34 Cobra, the boat went briefly to a body shop owner in Eastlake by the name of John Grbovac. John changed the name to "Serious" and did a cheapo paint job on it. I bought it as a project. Basically the motors ran briefly and when disassembled they were absolute garbage. The drives were in pretty good shape but they were totally redone. The boat was stripped to the gel and repainted with Amerflint- the toughest and hardest-to-apply paint known to man. The "Serious" graphic was redone by a local artist. Literally everything on the boat was redone. I'm guessing the rubrail screws and all external hardware are still hex-head.

I still have the bow tank from it sitting behind my shop- if you want it... I'm guessing it still has the giant Wolverine trim tabs?

At one point, the boat had a pair of destroked BBC turbo motors in it with Banks intercoolers- about 600 HP each. I had it to 113 mph and had 800 rpm left- too fast for me. The boat finally ended up with 355ci small blocks w/ tunnel rams. It went via a broker who was a velocity dealer at the time in one of the far-west Cleveland suburbs up on the lake.

The boat ran 75 with the 370 horse motors it had in it when it went. The only way to get big blocks in on those centers is to use Mercruiser manifolds. It really is a small-block boat.

I sold it in the summer of 1989, right before my son was born. I still have the original title.

P.S. That is the original dash location.

Here's the original Putt-Putt on its way out to the racecourse-

Very cool old boat!! I believe the early Velocitys were built in Pompano Beach. Steve Step should chime in on this one. He was really active in racing back then!

Yes, Steve was in Pompano at the time the boat was built and a few years afterwards.

After talking to Chris tonight, I have a lot more of an understanding of what we have here to work with. I'm excited and appreciate all the info everyone has provides so far. Will keep you posted with progress though its likely to be a slow go with other priorities (?).

ttrm007 03-20-2007 09:05 PM

Moving slow but having fun. Bought some nice throttle and shift controls, seat frames, etc... basically collecting parts right now. Still interested in getting into some nice 383's. I'm looking at a firm that has an EBAY store that seems to build some nice small blocks. Take a look. I'm always hesitant and haven't yet done my due dilligence but the power, parts, and price seem pretty attractive.

I'm also working on some seating. I have some great Aero bases from a Baja but still have questions. Take a look at the Baja forum to see what I'm after if interested.:

BODYSHOT1 03-21-2007 07:10 AM

Flagship Marine in FL builds some stout small blocks..check with them...

Great - Thanks for the tip Bodyshot. I'll do some surfing tonight to see what I can find.

Getting started again. The Still Crazy thread REALLY motivated me. Can I ever get her done?:party-smiley-004:

Action Steps - Need to keep moving

1. Put hatch in. This will need to have some creature comforts if my family is gonna buy in!
2. Bought trailer tires so I can get it out of the garage. They were seriously dry rotted.
3. Bought shorepower, air conditioner. What?! Yeah... if there are over-night options, need air. Have to do it before the rest of the interior.
4. Engaged a glass guy to fix my flaking gelcoat near transom step. After inspection, it appears there was a filler panel of sorts added to make space to bolt on the huge wolverine tabs. Headed to his shop for this repair and dash / controls location work along with a bulkhead in cabin area.
5. Started relocation of controls and opening cabin.
6. Old engine was about 800lbs and not too great shape. Going to build an all aluminum unit with scoops.

This is an OLD picture. The seats were rotted and vinyl messed up. Moving to two bolsters.

I have a thread in the formula section detailing my 86 272ls rebuild over the past 10 months. Sort by views or post and it is on the first page. I have done a "few" things like some new vinyl, refinished vinyl, new trim, bulkheads, stringers, motors, paint bilge, transom assemblies, drives, electrical, gauges, interior still ongoing...... Etc.

Have big plans again for the next round this winter now that it is running and that has remotivated me.

Keep at it, you can do it.

Great to see you working on the boat!! Keep pushing to get her back on the water. We'd love to run around with another old 30 some day. Make little goals and just keep chipping away. Every step is one step closer to being on the water!

Big blocks WOULD fit if I were willing to re-rig everything. When the boat had relatively mild 355's it ran in the 70's. I can build 427 ci, 585hp small blocks for about 7k each. Use all my existing stuff (exhaust, etc...), save a bunch of weight, and still be able to change the spark plugs without pulling the motors!!

Going with alum. heads and building an all alum. hatch. Should lighten the boat a lot.

For the money, I get a lot of horsepower and save a lot of rework.

I had sc 572's in my old 30 and it was tight but workable , the boat had big block turbo's before we swithched to super chargers . Very fast and fun to own , mine ran into the teens :ernaehrung004:

I've always said "It's not how much HP you have but how well your boat is built and how well the setup works!" I know alot of guys that have built big horsepower boats (both I/O and outboard) and they're constantly breaking things and out of the water. Build it right, set it up right and enjoy boating. At the end of the day, it's not how fast you went for a few minutes...it's coming back to the dock after a full day of boating under your own power!!
