Well, the 496 ho will need some work before the charger is installed, crank / rods / pistons and might as well slap some AFR heads on there. To bad you don't have a 502 and just install a whipple on there. You can put a whipple on a 496 like it is but a matter of time and you will be replacing some parts. Raylar make a kit to run the whipple. http://www.raylarengine.com/

I know a couple of guys that have put superchargers on stock 496s with good success; 1 Whipple and 1 Procharger.
From what I’ve read, the internals of the 496/8.1L are good for about 600HP but the pistons are casts not forged. You definitely need to change the head gaskets and the fuel mixture had better be right or the engine will melt down quickly.
For me the 3.5PSI kit from Procharger is the best bang for the $$ on these engines. You’ll gain 100-125HP so probably 8-10mph.
No way I’d put more than 5psi to a stock 496/8.1L; that would be a ticking time bomb.
I have not read much negative about Raylar prior to your post.

pull the 496 and put it in the corner to go back in if you sell the boat and find a 502 or get a motor built that has the parts in it that will hold up under a blower. then get a whipple and hang on. with a good motor and heads and a 3.3 liter whipple you can make from 700 to 1100 hp trust me look at my avatar
