Still Crazy

What a great job you did on the boat. What kind of paint did you use on the top and what was the white on the bottom.
Thanks, good luck with the boat. I have a 1986 22 Velocity that needs to look like that.

The Blue and Red are Base Coat - PPG Deltron 2000 DBC

The White on the outside of the boat is Single Stage - PPG Concept DCC.

The White in the engine room is Awlgrip Snow White.

Thanks for the compliments, we can't wait to get her in the water!

This is the world record run for Still Crazy in 1983. She should be running like this again very soon!

I have 2" shortys and think my X is too high.

Project is looking great! Thanks for taking the time for sharing. Been reading since day one. Will be in FL Oct-Dec and hope to catch up w/you:)

StillCrazy J&M 05-24-2011 09:20 PM

Thanks for the comments and support guys. We're working hard towards getting it ready for Jacksonville so hopefully people can check it out there. For those that aren't in FL I'll for sure post a ton of finished pics after the run.

I hope we can get her to run like she did in the video!

Here's a pic from this last weekend after installing one of my favorite things on the boat...the little american flag:)

I hope not!!!!

Steve made them so I'm confident he knows how to set them up. There sure won't be a lot of room between them!

ChineWalker 05-26-2011 06:04 AM

This thread has been magnificent! Beautiful boat, they certainly arn't making them like that anymore.Hope you get a chance to take a couple videos on her maden voyage...

The voice on the video is Stephen Fried who used to do a lot of our video back in the day. He had a company named Innerspace Video. A really cool guy. He died of a heart attack in 83 or 84. He was under 40. A great loss to the sport. People used to kid Steve because he used the same music track on all of his stuff. Humberto Picon used to say "Hey Steve, I'm buyn' you a new damn record."

not sure if I ever saw it in this thread or not but what was the original power back when they set the record??

ChineWalker 05-26-2011 08:38 AM

not sure if I ever saw it in this thread or not but what was the original power back when they set the record??

I searched the thread but didn't come up w anything that indicated the old power. I'm curious too; would really like to know how it compares to what goin in it... Dose anybody suppose one could assume it had blower motors? Or, was it common practice to use race hatches of that size on naturals?

StillCrazy J&M 05-26-2011 01:12 PM

Steve said the boat had small blocks that put out right around 500 horsepower each. Rebuilt HP 500's are going back in supposedly around 508hp each. The biggest difference is the drives and transmission. The boat originally had #2's and then was switched to #4's with Borg Warner trannies. Steve said it ran over 100 with the #2's and slowed down to the 93.890 with the #4's. After the speed trial I believe they got it to run around 95 tops.

It will be interesting to see what she'll run now without the higher loss from the #4's and trannies and with new prop technology. I'm not sure how we'll compare to the weight when it ran in '83 but I suspect it'll be more now with stereo, gps, etc and big blocks.

I would absolutely love to do the Bimini run. However, my family is insistent that we don't race the boat and I don't want to do anything that will hurt them, especially my grandfather.

If it is strictly a "run" I will definitely do one, if it's a race only it likely won't happen unfortunately.

you going to make Jacksonville?

Came across this thread tonight and I too couldn't stop reading, the anticipation of seeing the next picture and the progress of your project has kept me glued to the screen. Chasing a dream and turning it into reality is AMAZING to say the least. Your not just doing this for yourselves but your family and keeping the history of power boat racing alive! I hope you know this. I truly hope this piece of boating history gives you and your family (along with many spectators and fans) many years of speed and pleasure. Your doing a great job guys!
