Help with a 72C Rebuild
Hi,
I am currently having a Velvet Drive rebuilt to sit behind a N/A 509 BBC (currently being built). I think the engine should be around 550 HP or so. I have a 72C that I am going to put behind it and it needs a rebuild. I need help deciding if I should go with carbon clutches or brass clutches. The owner of the transmission shop told me that I should be OK with 7 brass clutches (with that power level). He said the carbon clutches are good, but if the transmision fails with the carbon clutches, then you have no forward or reverse. In comarision the brass clutches will weld together if the transmission fails and at least you will have forward gear and be able to get home. Thanks for the help.

That is true, however the graphite has a better chance of working. You should use more plates, our smallest unit has 9.

Thanks for the reply, is that 9 Bronze Clutches or 9 Carbon Fiber Clutches? Are Carbon Fiber Clutches the same as "Paper Clutches" that my builder is referring to?
Thanks
Thanks

Sorry to hijack thread but MBAM I have a similar question:
1) I have 71Cs with 1.5:1 ratios - can they be changed to 2:1?
2) Can they be beefed up to handle 500HP?
Thanks!

I'm gonna wake this thread back up.
I'm getting ready to build a 72c.
going to be @ 850 hp on a boat that likes being air born (78 Cigarette 20'.)
hot foot throttle, so pretty easy to get off the throttle with 2 hands on the wheel.
the main driver (and the guy paying the bills) really wants carbon fiber disc.
any thoughts?
where are they available?
