What is the fastest 29 Outlaw you know of?

The question has been asked about how fast a 29 Outlaw can go. I've seen the supposed 90 MPH one that was/is for sale. Do you personally know of any running over 90?

Dock Holiday 03-08-2007 01:35 PM

I would say yours is going to be one of the fastest!

I have seen a lot of 29's running in the 80+ MPH range.

All hulls have their limitation. Just not sure where that magic number is on the 29.

JasonSmith 03-08-2007 01:37 PM

Hey, am I aving dejavu? I swear I just read that somewhere else! Wink Wink

Kind of weird uh?

I could have swore that I had just posted this also?

My question is. How would the 29OL run with drive trims set at 4-5 rather than 7-8 for max speed. I assume this has to plays a part in how a boat stays planted.
When I trim to 7-8 any littel swell and I am chinew walking and usually back off throttles.
As some know I am close to pulling the trigger on a 35 Donzi ZR. I have not rode in one but been speaking with alot of folks and a Donzi Rep. He claimed I would not be trimming a ZR over 5. Him and my Local boat rep claim the same Baja needs alot of trim for Max speed. I dont know so dont argue.

I know when I trim...... my stern does lift out of the water big time.
Not trying to hijack just trying to understand some facts on speed.

Donzi is a stepped hull. They run more level and don't need as much trim. Baja, the old Cigs, Apaches, etc without steps require you to get the bow UP which means leverage from the drives IE TRIM.

As for the trim number, don't let that confuse you. Every boat is different. A #5 on one boat can be equal to a #7 on another. I have mine adjusted the way I like them and I know my boat. I could get in another 36 and the trim indicator be entirely different at equal speeds.

We are dropping motors in prob next week in the one I'll be bringing to pk for the fun run, 800 hp per side, but going easy on the throttles this year until drivesare upgraded

JasonSmith 03-08-2007 07:55 PM

I don't even look at the trim indicators most of the time. I drive by the way it feels. If you can't feel what it is doing, you don't need to be going fast.

My 29 ran best in the "6" neighborhood

By 7 or 8 you were loosing speed.

My 33 works best in the "6" neighborhood also.

Two of my friends have 36's, they need to be cranked up to "8" to make them run,
they both have boxes, but the drives seem mounted kind of low, I think the
drives being buried are what's causing the need for excess trim on these two.

Dock,
Where do yours run ?

thisistank 03-09-2007 12:28 AM

When I bought my 24 Outlaw in 97 new, the old owner of Baja had a son that built a 97 29 with (I believe) Merc 800's. It was out here and the sales guy I bought my boat from went for a ride in it out in the Pacific. Scared the crap out of him!:D

I don't know the exact numbers. Maybe Doc remembers the boat. I just remember seeing it and being in love. It was BAAAD! It had the purple splash graphics like my old Baja but was done to the 9's. I guess you can do that when daddy owns the company.:D

The 29 and 36 numbers are what ive experienced as well. the 36 takes a TON of trim. the 29 would lose speed after a certain level of trim.

I couldn't agree more. I have people ask all the time what I trim to and where I have the tabs set...........I don't really know how to answer.

I am constantly adjusting the drives when I am running hard during a poker run or something. I don't see how the h3ll you can run balls out without killing the boat or beating the chit out of yourself.

I mean it's not like the Ronco Rotisserie.....you can't just "set it and forget it"

Because you can manipulate the settings I do not feel the number really matters. Every boat can be different.

It is probably somewhere around 8. Dean Reynolds formally with Baja gave me some good advise.

Trim it till you start to loose speed, then trim back down a hair. Then you have all you are going to get.

SSE 04-01-2007 08:39 PM

Twin 454's with a little boost.

baywatch 04-02-2007 07:45 AM

A lotta boost? I was in one a couple years ago that was upper 80's low 90's and It was scary as hell. Way to squirlly for me. I am all about pushing the envelope, but I am not embracing a pre-mature death either. SSE, where did yours come from?

dogghouse 04-02-2007 08:54 AM

Yep sounds like this boat..........

SSE 04-02-2007 09:08 AM

Yes it can be very scary, the conditions have to just right. ( 6psi of boost) There is plenty throttle lift but I dont have the balls to let it eat yet.

JasonSmith 04-02-2007 10:34 PM

Let me have a crack at it ............I'll make sure it gets all the food it needs.

Just drop the hammer and start trimming...........when it starts to chine walk hold on and drop the tabs................then watch her climb.

SSE 04-03-2007 08:38 PM

The weather is going to be a little cooler this weekend, if I get to go out on the water I will see if I can get some new #'s.

Don't know yet. Motors are due to go back in this week. We'll know soon enough, but my guess is mid 90's.:drink:
