190 vs 196 Sunsport
Does anyone know the difference in the 190 Sunsport built in the early 80s and the 196 built in the later 80s. Looking on Baja’s web site the boats looks the same and they didn’t build a 190 and a 196 in the same year. It looks like they changed the name to 196 in 1987. I’m looking for a boat about this size and style to ski, tub, etc. and years ago a friend had a 196 and it was a great little boat.
Thanks, Speed

The running surface of both models are very close. Basicly we took a glass hull plug that was built in the 190 Sunsport hull mold, to modifiy it by streaching the transom back 6" more than the 190, we filled-in the concave sides, and deleted the molded area where the side lights were positioned. I would say that both hull designs run equally as well, and the 196 was available as a closed bow "Sport" model also.

Thank you for the info XT-Innovator. I spoke to the friend that had the boat and as it turned out it was a 200 Sun Sport (I never realized there was a 200, I always see the 190 & 196 for sale but never a 200). So I will be looking for a clean 200 if I can find one. I was always impressed how well that boat performed, handled rough water (for its size) just a cool little boat. Any info on what to look (or look out) for on these old boats would be great.
Thanks again,
Speed.
