StageII is done by Whipple
I will reread the posts to make sure I didn't miss anything here, but this is not adding up?? My original post states he would need 500+ hp to get there, could be done in a variety of different ways (like your friends boat). I am sure you friend is achieving 72 but with the list of modifications you are claiming I would guess he is pretty damn close if not over 500hp, thus making my original statement correct?? |
It would be possible for a 496 HO to make 500 neighborhood HP with a Whipple stage 2 ECM upgrade & CMI headers.
The ECM reflash requires 91 or 93 octane fuel. |
You can gain speed in your setup. I just gained 5MPH by raising my drive and engine up 3". Jason has had big improvments with boxes and shorties. I could not go up any higher due to clearance issues. Somday if the right deal came along I may try a Stellings box in the -2 position.

OK, I am not trying to be a smart ass here but now your say the boat you know about. Is the reason you disagree with me on, has a Whipple charger on it or is it just some performance upgrade, either way, it is a 496ho, with cmi's, reprogramed computer, so what HP is it making??? To disagree with me it has to be less than 500hp ?????? but still gps 72?????

I have an option
In my active thunder I bought a 525 on the forums here for 18k with 52 hours on it, then I sold my 496 HO for 8500.00 on the forums. The motor swap cost very little, I thought that was a great choice. I did not want to whipple or raylar my 496HO. I went from 63 to 72 MPH, but that is a 28 ft. boat. I would think in an outlaw you would be up in the mid 70's easy. Watch the classifeids.

thanks to all..................for the great ideas and comments, i have a better idea know on what to try! enjoy a safe and fun summer on the water. thanks again!.............:cool-smiley-027:

I just finished putting on the Raylar aluminum heads with Dana exhaust on my '08 496. Nothing else was done as I plan to go through the motor next winter and get more aggressive with the power. My 26 Outlaw gained 6 mph gps and a ton of midrange. I also agree with setup. My B1X is at 7" and I am sure scrubbing speed. A -2" IMCO SC is planned and I will post results when I get that done. Hope this helps.

Check the bottom hook
Eliminating the notorius bottom hook might pick up a few mph. The two inner most strakes usually have pretty decent hook.

I see alot of talk about adding CMI's here but what I don't understand is I thought running the 496's whith out the turbulators was a no no in most cases. Doesn't the CMI exhaust eliminate these thus intoducing the chance for a problem?
