Anything will pull anyting....(hence the wonderful Toyota commercial where it is pulling the Space Shuttle)...it's control, braking and "what if something happens" due to someone else in front of you or around you etc...can you control your load with a 1/2 ton? Casual towing point A to point B I would say sure... But for "towing" anything 29/302 + I'd go 3/4 ton. Why? Less wear and tear on your vehicle, more control..less "pucker factor". But eveyone is a backseat driver when it comes to suggestions so take mine for what it's worth. My x-father in law's 29 on the scales went 10,800 with gear and fuel in it. I have never weighed mine but it is what it is. I did put my current 29 on the back of my current father in law's new 1/2 Ram and it put the wheels in the wheel wells on the back...again..."it is what it is". I do know for a fact in the hill contry around Austin etc. I would not ever try and tow a 29 + with a 1/2 ton. I have been in to many situations where the 3/4 ton saved my hide where a 1/2 ton would have gotten me in trouble... Trust me...I have often weighed trading down to a 1/2 ton because I don't really need a 3/4 ton to drive 30 miles to work and back and the 29 is kept at the lake in a boat stall and they vallet me in the water with a tractor...but just knowing I can pull and go anywhere I want, when I want, cross country or wherever and not worry about anything but stupid trailer bearings and trailer tires then it's worth it to me.
Again...opinions are like a$$holes...everybody has one. All that matters is you are comfortable and if something brakes you can fix it.

That means you're backing up too fast and hitting the brakes too hard. I keep my 24 about 2 miles from mansfield and tote it over there with a chevy trailblazer. All other aspects of towing aside, just backing down the ramp is not a big deal. If I let too much speed build up it's easy to lock the brakes up and slide backward. But it's also very easy to go slow enough to completely avoid that.

Not apples to apples, but my daily driver is a Lincoln MKT with Ecoboost. Weighs about the same as an F150. I average 19.x combined. Not too bad for almost 400 HP and torque. I don't tow with it but I do have a heavy right foot.

This was Travis (Lakeway) a year ago last Summer when it was down only roughly 40'....and it is lower. The launch ramp was posted and said "use at your own risk" at that time as it was broken....No 1/2 ton would have worked on this ramp.

I know this is getting way off subject but I have to post it.
We get all crazy about towing. I don't know when they started to put ratings on trucks. All I know is we used to pull some heavy stuff on the farm with nothing more than a 1/2 ton Chevy. I'm talking a very heavy steel trailer, with a Bobcat, and several evergreens and tree's. I would not be suprised if that load was 25,000 pounds. Did you know you were pulling something sure you did. Would it stop on a dime no it would not. We are talking about a 1986 1/2 ton Chevy with a 350 that had what 200 Hp.
Certainly having a bigger truck is better, but we get all crazy like these trucks can't handle a 10,000 lb boat. Like it will mess the truck up, ruin the tranny.
