I wasn't going to chime in but got to thinking about some of the posts and reasons why the seller is being "Shady"...... my guess is and have seen it before doing a quick flip and not wanting to pay the sales tax on a large purchase he sells the boat (which is legally his) to someone and has them pay the taxes and transfer fee's (The title is already signed by the previous owner). Quick way to do this is through Ebay

That's why you are seeing "high dollar" items under his Ebay account

That doesn't explain why he/she has its location listed in Florida when the boat is really in Canada..... That's what "shady" imo....

Should I check on everything I have sold in the past to make sure the title is not in my name anymore? And how would one go about doing that? We should all get to work on this crisis immediately

Well, yes, I can believe that, actually, because I was involved in a case where the titled owner (buyer) and registered owner (seller) of a motor vehicle were sued jointly and severally by the estate of a car accident victim, where the accident occured 4 days after a vehicle sale and buyer hadn't visited Secretary of State. The bill of sale saved the registered owner's (seller's) assets, but didn't prevent several depositions and trips to civil court until the matter was resolved a couple years later between lawyers, insurance companies and the accident victim's estate. Obviously if the guy is a licensed dealer, rules are different.

Duffy may not lose assets, but time is money and he could very well get subpoenaed to explain the particulars of the sale if the guy isn't licensed and something happens. I'm not even sure how court of competent jurisdiction would be established because of the international aspect.

If it is listed in one location and is actually in another that is an Ebay violation and is reason not to complete the sale. NEVER wire money to an unknown source as it cannot be recovered! Run as fast as you can from deals that don't feel right. Just my 2 cents. Good luck with the boat search, Rob

I don't think this is (was) a scam at all. I've seen this boat for sale for a while (over a year anyway). The current owner is trying to flip it for more cash - which I think most people try and do !! I saw it advertised at 39k last year.
The boat WAS located in Southern Ontario but is now near the capital (Ottawa, Ontario). I'm about 30 mins away from there. This boat is for real and guy is trying to sell it. From his ad on Ebay and his ad on Kijiji, I think he is not knowledgeable on selling things and there could be a language barrier too. Not everyone who sells something is going to have a perfect description, vocabulary, grammar etc.

Here is his ad...he still has the boat and it seems like decent value. This current owner hasnt had it for that long nor did he do the work.

In Canada, we dont really have 'ownerships' for boats like some US states do. We have something similar to a title that is related to the VIN on the back and the license number on the front of the boat. Its quite normal to have a title from 3 owners back since a lot of ppl arent diligent to get it transferred into their name. Its an arduous process where you mail a receipt and boat information to a central location in another province here and takes 3 wks to get it back. Contrary to popular belief, there is tax to be paid on it which is why most people avoid actually putting it in their name. Our revenue agency eventually follows up on the sales declared, even if its 5 yrs later.

It looks like a nice boat,,,the 1/4 cabin and bravo drives are a killer for me though.
All that being said, this is not a scam and a real boat!! I think the selller is un-aware of the intricacies involved in posting ads.

You can also document the boat in Canada, which is even more of a nightmare.

Thanks for the info guys. I looked into it and it appears Canada treats boat sales like land sales here in the US. Unfortunately the bank wants more assurance and I don't blame them. I tried to work out the issues with the seller but he is not easy to deal with. It is too bad because I really like that boat. Duffy did an amazing job keeping it clean. The seller himself also did a great job and he told me about some upgrades and the motors which I think he did a fantastic job on. I didn't mind the small cabin (he told me it is best just for poker runs) or the Bravo's.
Actually it is killing me that it is still for sale and I still want to buy it.... hind sight is 20/20 but I guess I should have gotten a broker from here involved and finished the deal.
Well, if anyone on here buys it and then wants to sell it down the line I want first dibs!

So, you basically have a title that you need to send off and wait 3 agonizing weeks to get back and pay tax? Sounds EXACTLY like what we have in the states. If you aren't a dealer with a reassignable title or the owner with the title in your name, you really shouldn't expect anyone to do high dollar business with you.

It sounds like the seller is trying to make a fast buck and he doesnt really know what he is talking about. The ad does say it is in Canada but will be transported to the states for the final sale. Also how do the engine hours change from 100 to 50?????????????

I think the OP is in the right. It is sleaze ball sellers like this guy that put a bad taste in people's mouth.
