Accident on Lake Champlain...

3 Attachment(s)
Looks like Jay/dirtycarr had a mishap last with his Fountain 38 last night. I hope he is all right.

Thanks Tom A. for letting us know.

This is the text that was on the news.

http://tv3.wcax.com/n/fri11p.htm

"An East Montpelier man was seriously injured in a boating accident tonight. It happened in Malletts Bay near Marble Island. Colchester Police say 30-year old Jay Carr was driving at high speed-- when he hit another boat's wake-- and lost control. Carr was thrown against his own boat's cockpit-- and was seriously hurt."

Jay's rig, he's had it for 3 months.
2004 Fountain 38 twin 525.

Hope everyone is Ok? Any word yet ?

GLH 07-07-2007 09:01 AM

Just went to the Marina, boat looks all right.

From what I got and this is not verified

They were two in boat, as far as I know the other person was not hurt, looks like they must of hit a wave or something that made the boat swerve and Jay smashed his face in the Throttle/Shiffter assembly.

Broken nose and I am sure his mellon must be pretty messed up if he hit that... He is to be released from the hospital tomorrow.

Happened around 6PM on his way to pick up his gf at the marina.

bouyhunter 07-07-2007 09:11 AM

Hope he's alright.
Nice looking rig.

Now, it's only a matter of moments before someone starts talking about steps, beaks....

Let's just be glad it wasn't anymore serious, and hope that he has a quick recovery.

Count down to the "we need speed limits" chorus...

3...

Oh, wait, it's not an election year...

jmeng 07-07-2007 10:00 AM

Glad its not too serious.

penbroke 07-07-2007 10:56 AM

Glad it wasn't any worse. Hope to see you back on the water soon Jay.

How fast do you have to be going for something like this to happen?

At high speeds when you hit a wake, what causes the boat to react like that?

How big of a wave/wake would cause an accident like this?

Cuda - just like you, I've been on this board for awhile.
It happens everytime there is a mis-hap.
And it's tiring.
Everyone feels the need to blame it on something.

Let's just say something F-ed up. Glad no one was killed. And I hope a speedy recovery.

1) It doesn't take much speed.
2) Improper trim, or bad read of the wake/wave.
3) Not as big as you'd think, hit it wrong and a 2'er could do it.

I'm not an expert, and would never claim to be - just an opinion.

CAP071 07-07-2007 01:03 PM

Let's just say something F-ed up.

Or someone F-ed up. People are too quick to blame a boat builder or water conditions rather then themselves.

I see it all day long. Stay far enough away from the other boats so you can't read the person capacity plate:rolleyes:

1) It doesn't take much speed.
Driver error - should have been going slower
2) Improper trim, or bad read of the wake/wave.
Driver error - Driver doesn't know how to have hsi own boat trimmed for conditions
3) Not as big as you'd think, hit it wrong and a 2'er could do it.
Driver error - If it's unknown you should have been going slower or stayed farther back from the other boat

Yep - that's exactly what I was trying to say.

I really didn't mean to start this cycle of the thread, in fact, my intentions were to avoid it. I'm tired of every accident turning into a finger pointing game.
Something, or Someone F-ed up. It happens everyday.
I just hope the guy is alright.

Turbojack 07-07-2007 04:12 PM

Hope he is OK with no serious injuries.

I wonder what MPH high speed is?

The accident that happened on Lake Travis a number of weeks ago the news reported the boat was at high speed. Later the report said he was going 40mph.

On this lake I get passed all the time when I am running 40 by just about any boat, big cruisers and performance boats.

Tricky919 07-07-2007 06:43 PM

Same thing happened to me a few years back. Broke my nose and was hurting for a few weeks. 100% my fault, happened real fast. Thank God i had my lanyards on. Woke me up real quick.....

very true it could be bad at 25 to35mph thats fast to break you or your boat:eek:

bouy, have you actually ever run offshore?

2 foot seas is norm for us...and welcomed.

My condolences to the owner of this boat.

CAP071 07-07-2007 08:04 PM

WE should all be thankful no one was killed or seriously injured for life. We all too often read about deaths with these type of accidents on here esp. during the summer.

I grew up on Erie, 20+ years boating there. But, I know no one around here considers that offshore:rolleyes:

My point was bad things can happen even if the conditions aren't extreme and you're not prepared for it.

There is no reason to send any condolences, the driver was only injured, and the boat is still together.

This thread has just completely gone to hell, in a very short time.
I just hope the guy is OK.
Macklin - take your smack someplace else. This isn't the time or the place.

YEP
Hopefully nothing serious or lasting injuries.

CAP071 07-07-2007 09:38 PM

OH MY! I was stationed on the great lakes. Seen some snotty crap up there worse then offshore.

Direct quote from the Captain of the Fitzgerald: "I have a bad list, lost both radars. And am taking heavy seas over the deck. One of the worst seas I've ever been in." Moments before they went under

Yes, I know the Great Lakes can get pretty snotty so I apologize for that comment.

But I still offer condolences to the guy who had this unfortunate accident.

Let's all have a Big OSO Group Hug!

I may have gotten a little out of line myself - I apologize for that.

Any word on how he's doing?

Back4More 07-08-2007 09:48 AM

Glad to hear he's OK for the most part...

Jay Carr

Thought you all would like to know we just spoke with Jay and he is being released right now from the hospital. He is doing well with the exception of a headache, and lots of bruises. With any luck he'll be back in the saddle soon.

bouyhunter 07-08-2007 10:39 AM

Motion Denied - thanks for the update.

Sorry to hear, sounds like things turned out ok.

Son of a Gun 07-08-2007 05:35 PM

Best wishes for a speedy recovery Jay.

GLH 07-08-2007 05:45 PM

Just got off the phone with Jay minutes ago,

He does not remember what happened, he got knocked out, the guy with him that was all right brought the boat back to the Marina and the ambulance took him to the Hospital from there.

Apart from the Throttle and Shiffter being bent to hell the boat is fine.

Downtown42 07-08-2007 05:54 PM

good news.
