Actually that's a good point, we mostly spoke about docking and loading the boat on the trailer.
I also carry two anchors, my normal properly sized one and a smaller one I use as a rear anchor. There are times when we are set that the wind has the back of the boat pointing to the main boat traffic and wakes, so we will set the anchor backing into the wind, and toss out the rear anchor to keep the nose pointed to the main wakes. Similarly is we are anchored off near a beach, we will set the main anchor and back towards the beach until we are in chest deep water and then set the rear anchor on shore so we stay pointed into the wakes. (this is all on a lake)
And like 88 said, let out more line than you think you'll need. Every day I see people toss their anchor, and then pull in the slack so the rope is pointing almost straight down, and then they wonder why they never stay set.

The amount of line an anchor needs to stay set is referred to as "Scope"
The classic style anchor is a V plow or a danforth anchor between 7 & 10-1 scope.
These type anchors also need chain leader to set properly.
Never anchor in big water from the stern, or try to drive off a stern tied anchor that wont unset. This is what happened to the football players in florida- they killed themselves to save a 40 dollar anchors and swamped the boat trying to pull it out.
A very useful newer type anchor is a "box" anchor that needs no chain and only requires 2-1 scope.

You work on boats. How about asking you to help you out, most will probably love to run around in your boat w/o having to pay for gas. You never said where you are from, just "out in the sticks" That is probably good if you can go to a place with low boat traffic. You will be able to learn how to run your boat without having to worry about other boats.
