Cig 35 Project

I've been threatening to start this thread for a few weeks now. So, here goes...

Boat is an 84 flat deck. Story behind it- came out of Wisconsin. Supposedly the original owner ended himself up in prison and the boat sat in a barn for more than a few years. The original hour meter showed 184 hours. Boat was bought by a guy who painted it and got it running. He did a nice job on the hull but his attention to detail on the deck left something to be desired. Basically, he taped around all the hardware. Interior was original and pretty ratty.

The foundations are there. The boat is straight and solid and basically needs some updating. Here's the plan-

Strip and repaint deck- update all the hardware

New dash- all Livorsi

Paint engine compartment

New cockpit upholstery

Swap TRS for a nice new set of Konrads

540's with 8-71's

And all before June...

Here it is, on it's way to visit glassdave.

There's still some leftover "barn debris" in the old interior-

Engine compartment. On it's way to looking better...

TRS drives. They're really nice and really for sale.
(I'll make someone a good deal)

Closeup of the logo. A blend of new with a definite dose of old-school.

The thinking right now is to do it on a chrome background.

Another glassdave idea. Gotta draw the line on cost somewhere so this one ain't happening. Just can't swing the extra $500 right now ;)

Nice keep'em coming. Did you ever figure out what the tubes were for?

Chris Sunkin 03-13-2008 08:32 PM

The Konrads showed up yesterday afternoon. I sprung for the whole deal- The gimbals, the streamlined lowers, the 1.5" tiebar and all. If they work half as well as they look, I'll be thrilled.

Last I saw, Dave had all the ugly purple vinyl graphics off the side. We stripped the interior out and pulled all the deck hardware off last week and the transom stuff came off a few days later. It's all getting refinished or replaced.

Cockpit vinyl is going to be a solid lipstick red Mellohide- the faux leather stuff. It's so red it makes a Ferrari look orange.

Current thinking is that it was some sort of bong.

Dave was fascinated by them- like a cat with a bag of catnip ;)

SKRAMER 03-13-2008 09:03 PM

Congrats on the new wave crusher!!! Keep us updated!!

J-Bonz 03-13-2008 09:06 PM

Love it. Like SKRAMER said...................... Keep us updated!!!!!

Chris Sunkin 03-13-2008 09:10 PM

Well, It's in glassdave's hands now. Once he's done getting cleaned out in Vegas, I'll make another trip out to Toledo. I need to make templates for the dash panels- I also need to figure out where twice as many gauges are going to go. I may make a riser for in front of the gauge/steering pod. The only problem is I then lose the compass. I hate to depend solely on GPS.

Looks like a great project Chris. Better get crackin' if it's gonna be sunk....errr... I mean runnin' by June. :grinser010:

$500.00 now could pay off in spades later..:cool-smiley-011:

That boat would look great in that color!

I dont know Chris . . . . I still think this one would be great competition for that ice cream boat. It was inspired by the Bilge section of OSO and i call it "cant we all just get along" :D

OK . . . now does anyone in the Cig section have ANY idea what that square alluminum pipe thing is in post #3 and #4  . . . . I must find out . . . :cool-smiley-011:

Chris Sunkin 03-13-2008 11:02 PM

You and your toys!

When are you leaving for LV?

I'll guess its a mechanical fume detector???

priceb 03-14-2008 05:46 AM

Awesome! Cant wait to see the progress on your boat mate!.

cosmic12 03-14-2008 05:50 AM

I have to agree with the red, it looks great and 500.00 is cheap. Easier to do it now than later down the road.

nocigarette 03-14-2008 06:15 AM

How are the motors coming......As much knowledge as you have i assume you are doing those yourself?????

Chris Sunkin 03-14-2008 06:24 AM

Motors are just a pile of parts right now. I'm waiting on blocks to show up- everthing else is here. Everything but the blowers. Engine building is pretty much parts selection and attention to detail. The real skill is in the machine work. Fortunately I have a good friend who owns an automotive machine shop and is very good at what he does.

The $500 was a joke between Dave and I. That might cover the materials cost. Dave's reasonable, but the boy's gotta' eat.

Good question. I don't have a clue.

A little over $20K.

nocigarette 03-14-2008 01:09 PM

Thats not bad for a pair.....Especially if everything i am reading is true.....Cant ya give us some pics of parts or something chris.....I dont care if they are still in the boxes,it has been a long winter...

Holy Smokes 03-14-2008 02:20 PM

Looking GREAT! Glad to see someone resurrecting these old classics

I second everyone else's comments on the red. Add a silver or matching chrome boot strip along the chine and you'll have a look that never goes out of style. Love the idea of stretching the older "script" Cig logo to look more like the newer models.

I'm interested in your hydraulic steering off the TRS's. PM me a price.

Chris Sunkin 03-14-2008 02:24 PM

The Latham setup is staying on the boat- other than the saddles on the backs of the drives

I looked at converting to SSM IIIa's. The transom would have had to been completely re-done and I'd still have a drive they didn't make anymore. A set of SSM's in new shape were going to cost me 20 large anyway.

The Konrad setup has equivalent horsepower & torque rating but I get to enjoy using dirt-cheap Bravo big-shaft prop selection and skip the #6 prop prices.

I'll snap some pics of cardboard boxes later tonight!

Actually, when the Konrads showed up, I had to un-crate them to put them into the mini-storage locker. I have so much stuff strewn about that I didn't have room for them. Anyway, I forgot to take the camera. They are serious boat porn. The little reservoirs gave me a semi when I unwrapped them, Round Lexan bodies with billet caps and brackets- very trick. Pics are forthcoming!

Chris Sunkin 03-14-2008 05:23 PM

Some pics of the Konrads-

The gearcases are massive.

Chris Sunkin 03-14-2008 05:25 PM

Streamlined lowers were an option.

Chris Sunkin 03-14-2008 05:25 PM

The gimbal design addresses all the TRS shortcomings.
