I found a 31 cigarette that I really liked here on OSO and began negations with the seller, we agreed on a price, I got a survey done and to both of our suprise the value on the survey didn't support the purchase or a loan. The seller got so pissed at me and was determined that his was the nicest available and that the surveyor can't possibly know what he is doing. I tried very politely to tell him that I am not trying to tell him this boat isn't as nice as he feels it is. In fact I told him the reason I wanted it was that it was no nice and cared for. Anyhow I got to the point that I just simply told him " the value in the survey just won't support a loan. He exploded and told me " if you have to borrow money to buy and Cigarette, then I sound just go buy a Bay Liner". I have never been so offended by another boater. This boat is Hot, the seller is a bulldog. A note also: even if i did have the cash to pay for it, my loan from my credit union is 4.9% and after the interest deduction it's pretty cheap money. Anyone looking on OSO for a 31 cigarette, be careful of the bulldog.
probably to late at this point but maybe the SELLER can find and PAY for another survey if he thinks the surveyor undervalued his boat.

I offer for him to pay for a survey and split the difference.

He pissed me off so much that even if he offered to sell it to me for less then the survey, I will not buy his boat. After all this I have found a cafe that I am very interested in. Very well cared for and a seller not unrational. I am a very unemotional buyer and able to move on without missing a beat.

After the explosion he actually sent me an email to say that he is willing to lower the price (still not low enough). My reply was that "i'm sorry I am only able to finance a Bay Liner". Here the honest to God truth. If the guy didn't treat my surveyor like dirt and didn't explode, and insult me then I probable would have found a way to make it happen. This is one of those cases that the boat isn't worth dealing with the seller.

I don't think NADA means much at all. Surveyors have research on recently sold to compare just like realtors. Out of all the 31s sold the most expensive was a 91 (3 years newer) that sold for 55k and it took 2 years to sell.

While how you pay for your boat is solely your business, I can only imagine the scenarios the seller could be experiencing right now. He may be out of work, have a sick kid or both- or lots of other things. He could also be a tool. If you really like the boat, PM Ed Cozzi- he can help point you in the right direction. There are lots of boats for sale right now so I wouldn't sweat it. Or the seller.
Thanks for your advice. I agree that some professionals do not know their job and also people make mistakes. I'm my interview with the surveyor it was obvios he knows his job. With the difference in value he also began to queation his own findings and decided to get advice from other surveyors and Cigarette dealers. his findings were accurate.
I did find a nice boat, currenly owned buy a man who has cared for. he also realized that he has a lot of money invested in this boat that he will never get back, as well as understands the market conditions.
