I got 1 of these that is going to be restored starting in the coming weeks! I checked these numbers with one of the speed calculators and 1100 hp @76mph shows this boat to be 9600 + lbs. Chit i know there heavy but that's just not right? I'm going to weigh this thing once i have a trailer concern addressed. If it's that f-in heavy i'm done before i get started.

JohnnyMarshall 11-19-2010 06:18 AM

Maybe 9,600 with the trailer!! No way that boat weighs 9,600 LBS. I had a 32 fountain that weighed 7,500 dry weight, i cant imagine a 28 being to much different.

JohnnyMarshall 11-19-2010 06:20 AM

BLee would know the weight of a 28!!

carter38 11-19-2010 06:28 AM

They say a bullet is 8800 dry so there's noway a 28 is more.

Where did you get the speed calc?

CigDaze 11-19-2010 09:05 AM

My Cafe is 9,600 pounds dry. No way a 28 weighs anywhere near that.

buck183 11-19-2010 10:13 AM

I'm not an expert on the topic, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

I'm thinking the numbers I've been given on the 28SS for weight is in the 6,500-6,600lb range.

Buck

Buck

I think my 79SS with twin BB dry is in the 6000 range, with my tripple axle trailer I think it's close to 8000

golfmaxgolf 11-19-2010 05:26 PM

Bam!

golfmaxgolf 11-19-2010 05:32 PM

Brouchures that i have found say 7000lbs. I was hoping to loose at least 500lbs of dead weight. Still something in the advertised boat doesn't add up if the calculator i used was remotely close. Put the #'s in yourself , my hope is that the power is well overrated by the seller ,or the speed is way low.

Anyone have any more pictures of this boat?

northernoffshore 11-30-2010 12:04 AM

used to own it. ran 79-80 with 400 hp sbc406's. I removed anything heavy from it when it was rebuilt the first time. miss cigarette race boat mid ocean raced it before also.

Thanks, Owner is local to me he is sending me some pictures. The current owner states that it maybe one of three original factory race boats. The name on the boat was Fire-ship

Holes in the bottom?

northernoffshore 12-14-2010 04:04 PM

only along the v area and it has been repaired for a long time now. black sides, white deck with orange paint underneath it. Had the tall windshield. maybe 15 years ago now. that was a great boat and ran strong.

BERUBE 12-10-2011 08:58 PM

is this the same boat that is currently for sale in belleville, michigan?

northernoffshore 12-10-2011 09:25 PM

yes and it is a steal. I have thought about buying it back again , but ....... I can't believe no ones bought it yet at that price.

Are you Tim T.?

BERUBE 12-10-2011 10:08 PM

current owner claims that it is a factory built race boat with extra stringers and bracing is this not true. I am seriously considering buying this boat. thanks for any information on this boat

no,tim tackett bought it from me.here is a before and after pic. top pic is lake mich. and bottom st pete. Very strong and fast boat. I built the fairing and race hatch etc etc. for it.

Lee 12-10-2011 10:52 PM

OK, I was just wondering as I had raced against Tim in 97-98 in that boat and it did haul azz, in rough and calm water. I also met Todd Cimino (mid-ocean) when he raced with Tim at the Port Clinton race. Then a couple years later it showed up at the Grand Haven race with a different owner, never heard from Tim again.
Boat was very nice back then and was very dialed in, hopefully it is in similar condition.

i found an earlier post of yours, you wrote that it is 1976 but current owner is stating that it is a 1979 ??? do you know the history of this boat after you sold it? The current owner took it as partial trade on his bigger cig. and doesn't seem to have very much information on the boat or the engines. thanks

dreamer 12-13-2011 09:46 PM

My buddy greg here in Cleveland owned it too
Northern offshore is that u Greg?

BERUBE 12-13-2011 09:58 PM

going to have it surveyed thursday. if that goes well should be in my possession and will take out for a quick "burn" on friday to see what i have. if anyone knows who built the motors that are currently in the boat please let me know as the seller doesn't have that info. or any specs on the motors. thanks.

dreamer 12-14-2011 08:17 AM

Current pic?

BERUBE 12-14-2011 09:59 AM

it is listed on ebay in the detroit classified section. if somebody can link it over to this thread it might help me get some information on it. I have only owned boats with stock power, so i don't exactly know what i am getting into with 500 hp small blocks? how radical do they have to be to make that much power. I like the fact that it does not have blowers. Will i have to service the valve train at specific intervals? will it have a radical cam that will foul out plugs if it idles too long? I guess i will know more on friday. thanks

It is a 79 just got mixed up on the year , it has been a while since I owned it. It had 406's i built for it, but they went to 383's for the class they were in. Probably has the same Jimmy V heads and intake and carb set up, Big savage Gil oil coolers, and the crank mounted water pumps I used. The exhaust is gill also. I sure they have improved a lot on the boat in the last 12 years. here is a pic of the motors when i had it, hydraulic cams and a 600 rpm idle in gear and super reliable. Go for it you won't be disappointed.

thanks so much for the info. as you can probably tell from my posts that i am not a gear head and am a little intimidated by this little beast, but at this price i figure i can't go wrong. I will probably be asking for more info after the purchase. thanks again.

In the CL pics it appears that the drive gimbals are right under the rub rail. On mine they are about an inch and a half below. Does anyone know if the drive height was raised by a previous owner and how much was gained from this?

It came that way from the factory. I bought it as a stripped out bare hull and sanded it down to the gel, and would of seen any repairs or mods. Here is a transom pic

If your not a grease monkey probably not a good idea to buy an old raceboat. JMHO

If you want to be a grease monkey, this would be a good boat to get broken into with. After working in that tiny bilge anything else will be a cake walk.

bigboat28 12-15-2011 09:37 AM

Very nice and congrats if you get it. Maybe we will see you at Cumberland next summer.

bigboat28 12-15-2011 09:39 AM

Sorry never mind on the Cumberland thing, I read wrong post. Where are you at.

dreamer 12-15-2011 02:30 PM

needs race gas and valvetrain maint every 15 hrs
plus oil change every 10

not a pleasure boat

just got off the phone with the owner who traded it to the guy in mich

BERUBE 12-15-2011 11:26 PM

Miss Cigarette has a new caretaker. I will give her the TLC that she deserves. Thanks for all the great information and advise, especially to NORTHERNOFFSHORE who gave me the little extra encourgement that i needed to pull the trigger. Lake St. Clair will be her new home for now.
