Nauti by Nature Cigarette 38 Top Gun Refresh!!
Thought I would post my progress with the boat as I do the new engines and trans! A few people have asked me to post on here and I figure it wouldn't hurt to get all the work documented!
Removing the Engines http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps66398fa9.jpg Wife working the Forklift!! http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...1343485995.jpg Hatch Bracket I made.. http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...psc2ce0559.jpg Boat Sitting in the Driveway! http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0c3d7d90.jpg |
Reason we pulled them.... Trans was locked in gear...... :lolhit: If you click on it, it should play a video..
http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2769740c.jpg |
While the engines were out we took the boat down to the painter to have the side logo's put on.... The last owner Robert never had them put on..... IF you look at the driveway picture you can see what it looked like without them. We think it looks more streamlined now!!

Engines on the stands.
http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...1340830034.jpg Removing everything to get the trans off http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...1342107033.jpg After inspecting the engines and finding the wrong valve train components for Dart Pro 1 heads and push rods that were to short We decided to redo the engines. The guides were worn out and the heads were sent to Dart for a rebuild. Hopefully Chief will make things right with Robert (the last owner) since the heads only had 15 hours on them since Chief installed them.... Engines apart http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...1342107035.jpg Engine Parts! http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...1342107031.jpg |
New Rods for the engines
http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...psd8dce282.jpg Upgraded ARP 2000 Rod Bolts! http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8ed04445.jpg Polished the lifter valleys in the blocks http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2d842d59.jpg http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...1355759683.jpg Polished the lower ends http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps39016eb5.jpg http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps874f6171.jpg |
New Lifter Oil Spray Bar Mock Up. (Machine shop will machine the holes in the block for the spray bar!)
http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3ae36447.jpg http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0f6d9cf1.jpg Squared off the front and rear oil drains so Lifter Oil Spray Bar would sit on the block better. http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9a4b6885.jpg http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...psb675dd9a.jpg |
Blocks go to the machine shop this week!! They will get measured/bored for New Custom pistons. Everything will get balanced. All specs will be measured then back home so I can assemble everything!!
I am also converting the Mark IV block to Gen 6 Cams/Timing Chain!! I will post pics of everything when I get them back from the machine shop |
Now for the reason we pulled the engines out!! :party-smiley-004:
This was the trans that was locked up, (These are 11 Clutch 72C trans).... I found that the locked up trans had a BAM clutch hub (the good trans had a Huber Hub) The Bam hub is solid with no oiling holes. I feel that is why the clutches didnt last as long as Hubers So I switched it to a Huber Clutch Hub.... Now both trans have identical parts in them!!!!! :angry-smiley-038: http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...1340830036.jpg Removing the BAM hub http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...1344691071.jpg The New Huber Hub (I had to sweet talk Earl Zimmer from Huber to get this thing!! Thank you for taking care of me Earl!!!) :bunnydance: http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5e8ab811.jpg Everything Cleaned and damage assessed! Ordered new High Performance Graphite Forward Clutches, New Steels (11 clutch set up) and Gasket kits. I bought everything from Huber! You can see the Huber clutch hub installed! http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...1344908204.jpg |
Here is a BAM & Huber clutch hub comparison.... Huber Hub has around 15 oiling holes around the Hub to help get the hot oil out and away from the clutches.... The Bam is solid and I feel that is why the clutches didn't last as long.....
http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8881bd97.jpg http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...psce92bfb1.jpg http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...psf854f33f.jpg http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5aa3e8a6.jpg |
Bead Blasted all the old paint off the housings... Everything is re-cleaned and ready to assemble now!!
http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps691dda8b.jpg Forward Clutch Assembled!!* Earl Zimmer gave me all the specs needed to assemble his trans!! Earl is a class act and I can't say enough good things about him!! He is more concerned with getting your trans built right than making money off you!!* Thanks Again for everything Earl!! http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...1342284389.jpg Forward Clutch, Planetary and Reverse installed in the trans! http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...1345667940.jpg Checking trans endplay http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...1345667942.jpg Can't forget the trans bible!! IF anyone needs it I can email it to you in PDF.... http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...psbeb16f4a.jpg |
Trans Assembled & Painted. Notice the new custom 12 point stainless bolts and nuts!! I used anodized pipe plug fittings and -12 Cooler Fittings for Stainless Lines. Also installed new breathers!!
http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...1346070442.jpg http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...1346070432.jpg http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...1346070437.jpg http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...1346070435.jpg Both Trans were rebuilt with all new clutch packs! http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...1346718260.jpg |
Forgot to post a picture of the control valve.... This has Huber's oil pressure modification done to it!! look for the washer hehe
http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...psd4855475.jpg |
Well that pretty much brings us up to today!!
Detailed the bilge, figured out what hoses need to be replaced etc.. Need to refinish the tops of my sea strainers too.... http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps094603ad.jpg |
Lookin pretty sweet! Can you send me a 72C manual? I also had Earl do both my trannies, never met him, but was real easy to deal with over the phone.
|
2 things that make a good thread,,,, A good project with good pics. Very cool.
|
Hey, what transom assemblies are those? Konrad or cut down / trimmed off TRS assemblies?
I ask because I have a very similar set up and was thinking I could trim the "ears" off of the TRS plates since I am not using the switchable exhaust, I have the Konrads sitting in the box ready to bolt on. |
great pics & commentary!

Thanks Jason!! Looking forward to doing some boating with you this year!
I'm just waiting for Mike to free up some space in his shop to do the interior, he's swamped with the show and poker run right now. |
