Ren3 I started doing fiberglass repairs on corvettes in the mid 70s. I got so busy I started a corvette restoration shop with a good buddy and great mechanic in 1975 specializing in 1963 to 1967 models . Did that for 2 years then decided to back to school to become the Canadian equivalent of a CPA , been doing that for 30 years . I have always Been a motor head . Still have a correct 1964 corvette coupe and a 1969 camaro pro street I built up from a 300 dollar beater .
It is a sickness I'm sure but it keeps me off the streets. Rick G. |
Keep us posted with lots of pics, very cool project.

Hey Al maybe this summer we will have to rip it up around town. But first I have to fix the hole in my boat.
RG. |
first your hole, then my stagger, then rip up water and drive home in Camaro!!! boohyeah!!
|
Rick G, cool (ballsy) project.
One thing that drives me nuts on my notched cigarette is inside the eng compartment. When water gets on the notch from the inside, it is pretty much trapped up there. I would try to add some slope going from the transom, towards the bulkhead so the water will drain off. Even if you do this by just adding filler in the back and then faning it down to nothing. Or maybe a drain hole. |
Boomer you are bang on, the Scarab I had did the same thing . I had already planned once all the structural work was complete to add a sloped planel so that water doesn't sit there and turn green with algie . The other thing I noticed when I was prepping the bilge was that the insert that Cigarette laid in to mount the bilge pumps on was completely soaked and rotten . I removed that and am going to fab an all fiberglass mounting bracket there by eliminateing any rot issues. The other thing the notch will help with in my particular case is , as I am not coring the notch the through hull raw water pick ups and drain plug will have no way to wet the transom as it did in the old set up .

don't think we can do it to my (previously yours) Scarab... transmission interferance may/will be an issue with the stagger plan...
|
Oh wow I love that interior. So much room to sleep or bang one out.

AND NOW WE SHALL RETURN TO OUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED PROGRAM. ( lol)
I had a chance to get to the shop last night and do some grinding in the bilge to prep for the insert installation ( what a ***** still itching this morning ). I also have some pictures of the fitting of the insert . I made two wooden supports to hold the insert in place while I tab into place inside the bilge once that is done and cured I can grind outside and begin the external fiberglass work then complete the internal work . Rick G. |
Rick how many layers of glass (aramid) did you use to construct the insert?........can't wait to see what you got planned for the 27 sport......looks very professional!
|
Scippy I used 6 layers of biaxle stitch mat ( the weave with mat attached) I used alternating layers ,the unidirectional and cross directional weave . One weave gives longtitudial strength the other torsional rigidity . The finished product will be a total of at least 18 to 22 layers with Kevlar layered in the mix.
RG. |
That looks great! I can't wait to read about the change in characteristics when you get it all back together. Good luck. B

Not true at all. You may find it difficult but structurally it will be fine if you do it right. Good luck Hows the magnum? NK |
Hi Parnel I was wondering when you would pop up. Thanks amigo, I believe when I'm done it should be stronger than it was originaly given the layup schedule and the additional bracing I am including.
The magnum is on the spring schedule , I am acquiring parts . I have 1 motor , all the exhaust . 2 counter rotating alpha ss drives . I will begin the glass and hull prep when it warms up . I am toying with the idea of doing a stagger but in the end will probably go with a side by side setup. I think I will configure it as a sit boat thought . RG. |
Cool project....hope it helps the performance. I have a close friend that did the same thing to an '84 Kevlar Flat Deck, but he went with a larger notch like the Top Gun. Unfortunately, after running the boat for several years, he recently fabricated an aluminum plug to re-fill the notch. The difference is the boat has deeper #3's with 500hp and the notch intensified the porpoise. It also reduced cruising speed and created a need for more tab. The aluminum re-fill plug added cruise and ride quality in the lower HP/speed/drive height application.
Hopefully, the #5 and more HP will benefit from the modified notch. I think it would be very difficult to plane without it. Post some before and after performance figures when it's complete. :drink: |

Cignificant , thanks. I have to admit . I did ponder this for awhile and had serveral long conversations with Phil Lipship. He actually said that if I were to run a 3A drive I should run it 4 inches below the running surface and did not recommend a notch. As the 5 drive runs alot higher, at least 2.5 inches( if not more ) that I should run stand off boxes or a notch. He also said the normal notch that cigarette would put in ran from inner strake to inner strake and measured 12" X 12" . He told me that would be to big and that I should limit the notch to 9"X9" which I am doing . His experience was that this set up would make the 5 drive work and limit mid range porpoising . He did not suggest it would eliminate it all together. I will let you how I make out once I splash the boat.
to your point I am going to be running alittle more power 730hp and higher drive hieght. Rick G. P.S. too bad on the notch replacement I would have given your buddy a great deal on the piece I cut out of my boat (lol). |
Rick it was nice to see you & big Al last weekend I like what I saw with ur project keep up the good work I hope to come up this summer & see you an big Al

I got a chance to tab in the insert over the weekend. Now I can begin gringing and prepping the exterior hull and fit the mold I will use to suspend the the upside down fiberglass
( drip,drip). RG. |
Have you considered doing resin infusion on the outside/upside down layup? It's really not that hard to do and the application seems perfect. No need to babysit it while it sets up to make sure it doesn't sag, you can do it all in one shot.

c_deezy if you are suggesting what I would call vaccum bagging I have , but given the small area the reverse mold will work fine ( your idea is probably techincally better), plus I can apply hydraulic pressure to ensure a good bond and no air intrusion.
