The exhaust not sealed and leaking caused the rot? What is that thing a Fountain? :evilb:
When I sealed my stuff up I used resin thinned a bit with acetone and a little west system 403. Then still used life seal (basically 4200) in every bolt hole. The cutouts finished by painting them with a two part epoxy. |
Total boat actually sells a penetrating epoxy. You can thin it out as much as you want. The wood absorbs it. As mentioned it will never see water.
https://www.jamestowndistributors.co...t-detail/97636 as others have mentioned you can also use west systems. Just cut the epoxy down so it wicks into the wood versus sitting on top of the wood. when we did it on our top gun the transom was so impregnated with epoxy we had a hard time getting it to absorb more. |
Great thread and project. Congrats! Just my 2 cents though: The airhorn in Lil Carpe needs to find it's way into the Cig...

Made some gaskets, didn`t want to glue to a new transom till I know where it likes to be height wise

Stuff came today ... I was thinking I need to go one size bigger drill if filling with resin but since this is a penetrating epoxy I should be fine with exact sized hole ?
we focused on transom cut outs and exhaust holes. if you plan to seal drilled holes you could use something like a plumber applicator. word of caution…before applying any epoxy I would highly recommend taping all cutouts you plan to seal. Both outside transom and inside. You will have drips and runs. The painters tape will prevent epoxy from getting on the transom paint. Once the epoxy has settled peel it off. Would do when somewhat tacky so you aren’t struggling to peel tape off. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...7c52d27e3.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...48eac6f4e.jpeg |
Makes sense, I got some long and extra large q-tips for the smaller holes but I like that applicator idea.
Thank you! |
Coated all the holes over and over and finished with some life caulk before fasteners went in.
The penetrating epoxy stays tacky for a day .. wonder if adding more hardener would make that faster .. anyway some movement this weekend while I had some time. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...0787cbfd6f.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...645436b1dd.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...9362dc5f95.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...503afd2391.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c852ea6ad9.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...7ddab038da.jpg (tape is so I don`t scratch the fresh powdercoat) |
