Because it was as rotten as a Fountain lol. The boat changed hands 3-4 times in about 24 months because owners realized it was rotten, and I bought it with that knowledge planning on a transom and maybe stringer repair in mind. Ended up transom/stringers/bulkhead etc.,. but the boat was solid in cabin hahaha
Any neglected boat will get wet/rot
Apparently your stringer and transom were rotten from the inside.
Was the cause putrid bilge water that had never been drained or poor workmanship during manufacture?
On my Cigarette transom and hull are still ok after 40 years. I was able to check recently the transom when replacing a trim tab and the broken scoop. I'm always concerned for potential rotten areas and checking them by tapping with a plastic hammer.
The only thing that was rotten on mine years ago was the support for the bilge pumps. In addition, the mounting bolts of the TRS gimbal housing are corrosion-prone. I already replaced them twenty years ago with bolts made of more corrosion resistant material.
Ice was about 7 inches thick but did not damage the hull or the drives, anyway I had to assure that the sea-valves do not freeze from the bilge side.

Would be interesting to know if Cigarette had changed the layout after 1984 because your boat is from 1986 and does not show the same configuration like mine.
