Default lifting a t/s cig?

is it neccessary to go past the first step to lift a t/s ? at my marina the drives are real close to the lift and the forks barley catch in front of the step is this neccessary or can you just catch it before the first step and not worry?

A brand new TopGunTS was dropped by forks on L.I. last year, many marinas won't fork a TS, and I won't my 42TS, slings are slower but much safer!
