Scippy, First off, thanks for you service to the FDNY... I couldn't even imagine what you and your brothers went through... We continue to look up to you guys.. Isn't Sheepshead bay where Bobby S. came from? I always loved visiting there and trying out a the different restaurants. It was pretty cool my wife lived in Greenpoint since she is 100% polish. She didn't know it was a polish community until after she signed the lease. It was good for here since she was away from home. This glass work is alot of fun but takes alot of time when your learning as you go.. I feel pretty good on how it is coming out.... How much work do you have left on your Magnum?
Jr. Thanks for the grateful sentiments.......it was a wonderful 25 years!.......Don't know if Bobby Saccenti was born in Sheepshead bay, Bklyn. (must google that) I do know for sure that Don Aronow was born here in '27 as well as a few other icon's in the sporting world such as, Vince Lombardi and horse trainer Honey "fitz" simmons.....Larry David went to SHB high school. My '76 Magnum 27' sport was purchased as a bare Hull 2 years ago.......since then I've,...Replaced the whole transom, Fabricated the missing engine hatch, Replaced 2 old fuel tanks with new, Glassed the full hull & deck together (inside & out) I've removed the rub-rail completely and in the process of capping the deck smooth..........I'd like to blue print the bottom before I reinstall the new gas tanks and then lastly replace the cabin bulkhead that's beside it.........Also, I've lowered the cockpit sole by 6".....and mind you, this is all before I get to paint, interior & rigging..Minnngaaaa!!......Yea the occasional set backs, but I don't mind it at all.........I just love (as I see you do) getting involved in your own restoration on the boats that are worth saving. |

Lines were marked and it was ready to cut out all the filler...... I then prepped to get ready to re glass it for the second time. I knew I was going to loos 3 weeks but it was the right decision regardless how it came out.......

I still think my idea was good in thought but, just poorly executed.... First I think the "mold" should have been beefed up with structural support. Second, It was super bowl Sunday and the wife and I decided to glass it in before we had to go to a party --> BAD IDEA... 3. I did not triple check the mold from the underside... Ultimately it sagged on me... And there were a few other issues Glass Dave would uncover..... Here is how it went back together....

Once the glass was wetted out I installed marine grade plywood for coring since I had it readily available...

In between all the squares we filled in with epoxy mixed with filler. Then a few layers of glass was rolled on.... After that we were off to see the Packers go to the SuperBowl......

Jr,
I keep forgetting this resto might in fact have already been completed by now....... (reference to last years SB)...non the less, greatly documented and hope it takes us right up to completion and splash. |
Funny thing about molds. There's a lot more force applied in just about every direction than most of us fail to think about. Just the heat generated in the curing process makes for all sorts of stress. Still, looks great!

This is a great thread to read! Amazing boat and people it seems. Ok questions for the apache scout gang: How can I flip the apache scout in a small shop to wet sand the bottom? No use of a fork lift... There is access to a gantry crane, or a back hoe. Can we flip it over on a few tractor trailer tires. Thanks and i hope i am not taking away from the thread, but its still apache scout qs and comments. Cant wait to see more of Bonz stuff!
