I think you're right about the HP rating but the temptation of a V6, or as I remember them, 'Black Max' would be too great.
Stuff the rating, stick with the 135.

The transom seems pretty solid... a couple years ago they had a metal bracket fabricated up for some additional support.

Any suggestions on how to polish it up and get rid of the oxidation on the gel coat and all the chrome pieces?

Couple of silly questions for anyone smarter than I. Can you still buy parts for that 140 from a Merc dealer or are you limited now to shopping after market and second hand? When did the Alpha drive come out? Would it be near impossible searching drive parts?

Something else I've always wondered about has been asked above. Can you bring the clear over metal flake back to life after it has oxidized?

I had one for a few months, same color even. I bought it as a basket case, and parted it out; even made a few bucks.
