38ZR Updates

I don’t post a whole lot but I’m feeling sentimental before we winterize for the offseason. So thought I’d share photos of updates I’ve done to our 38 since taking ownership in 2020 to maybe give other 38 owners some ideas. Whippled 525s, Imco scx-4s with 17.25” 35 pitch cleavers. Best of 108mph.

Pictures from 2020 with painted windscreen, very worn original interior, blue panels etc…

2020-2021. New interior. Got plenty of ball busting for using the kids colored pencils to come up with new interior colors and design, but it actually worked really well. Thought about diamond stitch and other patterns but in the end kept it pretty simple. Marine Tops in Omro, WI did great work on the interior. Had them add some foam between seats to give more definition. Original ZR interior was way to plain jane for me.

2021-2022. Just about bit off more than I could chew. Thinking about it all still gives me anxiety. Just got it back together by Memorial Day weekend. New carbon fiber panels, new switches, stereo, floor in cabin because they used finish nails to secure it down which eventually just rotted through the balsa floor, moved key switches from under rear stbd seat to driver side gunnel, powder coat a few parts…

IGetWet 10-08-2022 08:33 AM

Engine hatch drove me nuts how it rubbed and unfinished edges sat on finished gel coat so I had to do some “body work” to flatten and square it up. Better now but still not perfect.

Added a switch in stbd rear gunnel to open engine hatch so you don’t have to be at the helm to open the hatch. Still have another switch in fuse panel at helm.

Added electronic valves in intercooler plumbing to stop water flow through intercooler while on running on hose or even when idling in cold WI waters. Green valves open, red valves closed. Couldn’t barely warm oil up when running on the hose before with two stage water pumps. Light smoke windscreen is sooo much better than painted windscreen imo.

WOW! You have deeper pockets than me. That's beautiful.

rak rua 10-08-2022 08:51 AM

Had me a bit concerned with the kids pencil work but thankfully, the finished product turned out very nicely. 🙂
Nice looking boat and at 108mph, she’s damn fast too!

Got a few more pictures but I think the data center cutting me off for now. Keep getting errors. Should probably get to that winterizing now anyways. Was hoping for more than 40 degrees though.

Pockets aren’t that deep. Wouldn’t be able to own a boat like this if I didn’t do 95% of the work and maintenance etc myself. And you really don’t get to know your baby until you rip her all apart and expose her!

Wildman_grafix 10-08-2022 09:14 AM

On the carbon panels did you buy sheets and make them yourself?

where did u get them?

Yes I cut them out of that one big sheet pictured. Bought it from composite envisions in Wausau, WI. I think this stuff was .120” thick. Diamond jig saw blades and hole saws and lots of drill bit sharpening. Dulls bits and blades pretty quick but way easier to work with than carbon kevlar. Brother in law clear coats carbon parts all day so he did me a solid and cleared them for me and made a completely one off glove box lid.

You can also get veneers from composite envisions with the 3m adhesive already on the back side. That is what I used for the breaker panel in the cabin.

Very nicely done, great job!

What switches did you use? The buttons I keep finding are only rated for 3-5 amps

Gary C 10-09-2022 03:23 PM

I can agree with every word you said in that statement!!! I just finished my AT earlier this year and it was a long process doing most of it myself. You will learn that there is not a whole lot to taking the boat apart once you get started and most things are easy to do yourself if you just take the time to try. Congrats on a job very well done!!

Looks Great 👍. Who did the carpet? Did you permanently remove the toilet from the head?

neva satisfied 10-10-2022 05:41 AM

Absolutely Gorgeous!!
Can't wait to see more pics. I love what you did with the relocation of the keys. I always hated where Donzi mounted the keys on the ZR's. Such a pain in the ass when you have a boat full of people and your trying to either start the boat or turn it off.

Where are they normally?
I didn't see them in the before pics.

I used the bluewater 19mm mechanical switches. Any of the higher amperage loads are switched via relays.

IGetWet 10-10-2022 12:56 PM

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Thank you! Your AT is definitely one of if not the coolest AT out there. My wife says I have real issues with not being able to leave well enough alone but you do learn a lot.

Yes I did remove the toilet and the holding tank. Probably the biggest complaint with the ZRs, tight cabin, tight head. So for me at 6’4” trying to use the head was laughable. I’ve also found it easier to just pull a porta potty out of the boat after a day anyways to empty and clean.

I had marine tops redo the big piece of carpet and I installed covered the rest myself.

They are under the rear seat on the Starboard side along with the battery switches.

People give Cig hell for their's being in the middle of the cabin,,,,,,, the highest head room spot possible.

I like seeing the upgrades that are done by the owners, nice job.

Gotchya. Actually now that I think back the only high load are the Teague muffler exhaust tips and they were already controlled through solenoids. Other than that, all lights are now LEDs. Blowers and bilge pump are under 10amps.

These LED lit switches do require a small diode to be placed as close to the load as possible however. Somewhat of a pain but not terrible.

They pulled a mold off the original. Brother in law had to do a ton of work to get the original straight and true to pull a mold. Carbon with honeycomb in the middle to make up for the almost .375” thickness.
