Default Broken Retainer on Output Houseing- Help

I have Mercruiser Trans w/ TRS drives on my old "77" 26' Formula Thunderbird.
Somehow the retainer plate on the rear of the output housing is busted up.
Where can I get this part, Please ! Any suggestions.
And how could this happen?
Thanks, Larry
