Comment:

Well I ran the complete SCX with the 2 inch prop shaft and a cleaver prop and it did not hop.

Reason is the cleaver provided the necessary transom lift to raise the cav plate out of the water.

If you can PM me your e-mail address or phone number I will send them to you.

I do not know how to manually down size a photo to fit the criteria on this site.

I will try to get it done.

kap, go to www.photobucket.com it is free and upload your pics there, then you can use the image tag and post them here in whatever size they are. :)

You can use Iphoto or Picasa to downsize.

The second photo is a standard Cav plate it is longer and wider.

The upper photo has a modified Cav plate which is also tapered.

I need to finish testing stuff before I decide the final solution.

Oh! as for going up DonRoc I cannot go up any further even if I wanted to the cleaver will hit the upper cav plate. That is as high as I can go right now on the lower unit.

It really needs to go up about half to three quarters of an inch.
but it pulls like dozer when you hit it torques the whole boat over onto the starboard sponson.

Here is a photo of the power plant:

I must say I'm growing tired of banging on my motor and paying for race gas to figure this out.

I am almost there though and IMCO has been helping along the way so it makes much more palatable:).

I am staying home this 4th no need to fight the craziness on the water--- when next week will be perfect for boating.

Kap thanks for all the info on the drive.I was on imco's website and if i was reading it right you can run a old ssm #3 or #5 lower on the scx.I know they are getting hard to find parts for but i wonder how it would run with your cleaver.I know they where a very fast lower end.

I look fwd to your pics of the cav plate mod,
thanks

Very good point. I was thinking of staying with the SCX and trying a -1 or so shorty. But you're right, a shorty would not change the relationship of the cav plate to boat bottom.

For some reason, on my boat, the SCX seemed to rob some HP. Enough so that I had to prop down to get the boat to roll over within reason. Could have been because I didn't put enough hours on it to loosen it up.

In any event the MMW drive is doing great for now. Having a spare MMW drive built now and I will be swapping drives out every 30hrs or so for inspection.

In theory you can continue to run a built Bravo but in the end you will break an uppergear set and it will cost you dearly more so if you hurt the case.

Second, the SCX upper is not bad in some boats NO noticeable speed loss but most I have seen running it with no speed loss are running a 1.5 to 2 inch shorty versus a standard height. This may explain why it did not scrub noticeable speed off their top end or they are not being truthful, naive or semi-surfacing the drive and still getting the speed---that will lop ears off of lab finished props.

Lastly, I just finished the template for my upper and have at least two people waiting on me to finish before they pull the trigger. My rationale is the SCX/SC combo is a good one at least I won't break the upper and the only Achilles heel will be the lower SC unit but so what it is far cheaper than an upper.

The real difficulty I am having is the speed loss on the top end still not real comfortable with that loss of speed differential.

Note: Rvrrat did not try the modified drive with the shorter cav plate and I believe it was a mistake on his part. He is a turn key kinda guy and does not want to mess with anything. All it will take is one failure and he may revisit this drive real soon:drink:.
