Do you have to have the hp gimble ring for the scx helment or will it fit on the standard one?

The SCX helmet will fit on a standard gimble ring.

But the standard ring has screw in hinge pins and the hd doesn't I thought

This is just my opinion, but if you feel you have enough power to warrant upgrading to an SCX, I would think you also need an HP ring.

You are probably correct...but...

One of the swaps I did was on a heavy cruiser with a B3 lower on it. The double blades of the B3 in combination with the 502 motor, kept eating uppers. The solution was to use a SCX upper with the B3 lower...problem solved.

Either the standard gimble or the HP gimble will work with the SCX helmet.

Yeah, I agree wuth that, I am just geared for thinking towards performance boats, not cruisers.
