I like the Idea of crash boxes but think they would be a pain in the cack with the type of boating we do.

I have Huber 1200's. Never a trans problem. Well once a plug fell out and ran out of fluid, but that doesn't count. I have many friends running hubers, bams, with big power and good luck.

exactly, if transmissions were an issue the big power drives would not use them....

The tranny's really don't rob as much power as one thinks as well. Plus the shifting is silky smooth.

Crash Boxes Only way I will go. Never drove my boat without them good way to learn. And no scratches from the dock. But I did install 24v starters. LOL

The cases, upper and lower, for the #4 and the #5 SSM drives are not the same and the parts from a #4 and a #5 will NOT interchange.

Crash box you have a neutral fwd and rev. You half to start in gear and shut it off to put in neutral fwd and reverse. Its tricky around the dock. But the benefit is they almost never brake and no maintenance.
Some of the SCS Crash boxes have a air operated clutch to shift.

Just my opinion!
It's the SSMII that he rated under the XR not the SSMIII
