dropped the boat back in the water to check the coupler. Engine fired up briefly, but doesn’t idle well until it’s warm. Got the wife to look and she claimed both were spinning the same speed. Engine died again and the drive is now locked up. Will likely have to drain and pull the drive tomorrow

The fact that your drive appears locked up, I doubt it's the coupler, most likely your clutch failed. In order to check your clutch you will need special tools. You can pull your top cap and back cap and see if you have any metal or visible damage. If so, it's time to take the drive to someone to rebuild, but with the power you have, I would get a better drive.

Well the upper is trashed and metal was sent throughout.
guess it’s decision time now. Looking at like about 18k for a new upper sending the lower to imco for rebuild and a few other parts (helmet, drive reservoir and adaptor for the steering)
that’s probably the same as rebuilding and then Buying a spare

My lower was full of metal when the upper let go.
That's the ball park on money.
I had to replace the ring. Pins, all bellows and hoses
shift cable.
Upper came with helmet, reservoir and coupler.
Got a good deal on a new xr lower.
it's a significant amount of work to switch too.
Doing it myself so going slow.
