Hopefully someone with rigging experience can offer their insight.
As far as worn out components in the transmission being a contributing factor, I have no idea.
Is the input on the transmission in the center of the tail sock?
YES, and still it doesn't receive the yoke...........The only thing I can see is inside the outermost portion of the spline is a large 0-ring or seal that is not completely centered around transmission input more space at 12 o'clock less at 6 o'clock

Yes that is an oil seal, I have not had a transmission apart so I don't know for sure, but I would think that if the seal appears to not be in the center it may be worth investigating further. But again I don't have any first hand knowledge of the assembly inside the transmission.
Any way of getting a decent photo of the tail stock?

In about a weeks time Just made plans to have my boat moved to an indoor garage where the engine will hoisted out from a gantry. Engine hatch had already been
removed for new glass work and paint & rear bench seat to be reupholstered.......the proverbial "just getting a little things done" could snowball from here on out.

It took a simple sanding to remove the slight ridge of metal built up around the front portion of the spline which prevented
the outdrive yoke to slip back into place.......now the drive slips in perfectly after the metal was deburred....reason outdrive
detached easily, but hard to re-attach.
