Default school me on arneson surface drives..

i’ve seen the 7 m kit to retrofit a bravo one drive, but what’s involved in replacing the whole drive, i get you’d have to alter the transom, but isn’t putting a non conversion unit cheaper? whats involved? can it be done with used parts more reasonably?

to install an 8 drive the engine needs to go forward about 18 inches the 7 kit puts the transmission inside the extension box so the engines stay in stock location

Does anyone know the transom to prop length difference between A7 conversion and say, a Bravo III? Basically, how much more will the Arneson stick out?

I don't know how long the Bravo III is but I can say that the Arneson 7M is 51 inches from the transom to the tip of the prop shaft .

I think most ASD8 drives are not the drop down style..they mount lower and are a 1:1 setup that needs a transmision with a V drive setup.

ASD7 uses the ASD6 box with a different prop shaft tube and the extension boxes. Depending on your power...going ASD6 and getting extension boxes may be the best method.

Back from the Dead; '81 Scarab 38 Resto

HBlair has some good photos of the non-Bravo setup. Still uses extension boxes, but uses the inner transom mount for the extension box as a trans mount to hold the rear of the engine.

Photos at the end show inside the ext box.

Asd7 uses the larger 26spline prop shaft, vs ASD6 19spline.

ASD7 also has a build in low profile steering ram attached to the ext box side...vs requiring an extended transom mount.

Nice to have the engines aft for CG, and easy engine room change costs etc. There's often used ASD7 setups around. I think KAAMA has 2.
