Yes you want that much water pressure or you will hot spot the motor. Pfaff says the more the better we stayed around 30 max. It's just the water pressure usually the more drag you are creating with a thru hull pick up.

I am surprised your XR drive will hold up behind that much hp. Be careful increasing your prop size, etc.. As you decrease your slip, you'll see bigger numbers, but you're also putting more stress on that drive. I tore through 4 bravo style drives with lower slip, higher speed prodicing labbed 5 blade props. While I lost some top end moving back to 4 blade props, I haven't blown a drive in 3 seasons (knock on wood).
