Mine are Weiand Team G intakes. The carb surface is 4 1/2 inches above the mounting holes on the head. I'm running Dominators and Eddie Marine 5x10 arrestors , which gives me about an inch over the center stud .
Nothing touches the mirrors but I wouldn't put two 200 lb r's on the engine hatch at the same time

Thanks for the information. I believe I should be ok, the dart hp500 intake is about 5 inches and my arrestors are 4". Plus, I believe the 540's are taller than the 454's, right?

540s can be standard or tall deck. Mine are standard , as the tall deck is also slightly wider since the 90* V goes out as welll as up with the increased deck height. Believe me when I say "One more coat of paint on my headers of hatch lift motor and the lift motor wouldn't fit"
Sounds like you'll be ok

Mopwer,

I have a used set of 454/420hp long blocks at the machine shop disassembled and ready for machining, head work etc.

Based on your experience with those 540's/650+ hp motors, what would you guess my GPS speed would be with 525hp per side?

Also, did you change the gear ratio in the drives?

I am guessing that I will go to 1.36 ratio from 1.50 and stay around 26-27 pitch prop. This was suggeted by my best friend whom set-up a 91' 32 fountain with a pair of TylerCcrockett 502-600hp motors. Different hull but similiar concept.

Any input from other high HP 272 SR-1 owners would be appreciated!

525 per side , I would think upper 70 to near 80. Non stepped hulls tend to be a little slower but you probably already know this.
28 Bravos should work with 1.5 gears. No real need for expense of changing gears.

Trust me when I say you need good hydraulic streering over 75mph.

Mopower,
Since your "further along the curve" with your performance upgrades, did you ever install the hydraulic steering?

If so, what company did you it buy from?

I should have both motors finished and Dyno'd in a month and will be pulling the old 330's in 2-3 weeks. I am also going to powder coat the tab mounts/tabs and install the steering.

I have XS Marine steering. And No , it's not installed yet. I farted around from May to the week before Labor day with some type of slippage problem. Right engine would spim 5900 rpm and at 3000 on each engine my speed was 42 mph instead of 50 with 28 Bravos. Since then I have been just enjoying it. Almost any hydraulic steering will have some clearance problems with the Silent Thunder

I was afraid of clearance problems. I have to keep the ST platform for the kids! Thanks for all the advice. BTW, I'm originally from Long Island. Not too far from N.J. !

You won't be able to tilt all the way up as center mounted steering rams will hit the center pod of the ST. I have K-planes and no room to mount the rams outside the drives. A friend of mine has center mount rams on his 272 and his wife was nice enough to raise the drives when loading it on the trailer and BENT the rams and screwed up th ST

BTW, I'm a long way from Long Island....like the other end of the state(exit 2 of the turnpike)

Thinking about a 272, '88-89. Trying to get back into boating and had an '84 242. Any problems to look for, rotten transoms or stringers? I had 350/260 alphas but the 272 was offered with 454/330/365 bravos. There are both combos out there for sale, any feedback on both? Clay
