My wife and I opted for the 35' instead of the 29'. The boat handled the water at Grand Lake much better. You are right on the insurance...full coverage is a little over 6K for the year. I think alot of it has to do with the SC 525s and our age.

A 35 with 502's is easy to insure under $1000. 496HO's is easy to insure, too. But if you tell them you have 500s' or bigger, you need to go thru one of the companies that use Markel (sp?). You can only get a quote from one of the brokers because Markel then locks you out by name or address for 90 days so no other broker can quote you - that kinda sucks! If we took a $10,000 deductible, we could get insurance for 6 months with a 6 month layup, inland lakes only, for $1700 on a 35 with 500's valued at $110K. 502's or 496's was OK with Progressive and a $250 or ($500 - dont remember anymore) deductible for same valued boat, same terms and coverage was right at $1000. Having an insurance payment that is as much as a car payment, with nothing to show for it and only get 6 months use from the boat, didn't make alot of sense to me, but nothing to do with HP boats makes much sense, anyways.
We decided to wait and just get a 353 Fastech with 500s' or a 38 Fountian with 500s' - progressive would take either of those for right at $1000 per year and reasonable deductible, although I'm not planning on using the deductible.
I've had some of the best try to "slide" me in with one of the non HP carriers, but they seem to be getting wise to this effort - or , I have heard that they won't pay if you do have a loss.

Progressive caps their policies at 75 mph for "performance boats". I think it was 85- 90mph for bass boats - figure that one out
Progressive also has a formula to determine the max hp that they will cover for a given boat model ie, twin 425hp for a 35 Lightning, but twin 470 hp for a 353 Formula and twin 470hp for a 38 Fountain. That has helped us determine what the "next boat" will be. State Farm nearly choked when I asked about a 35 Lightning. Nationwide would take a HP boat, but they underwrote the policy thru Progressive, so Progressive's rules applied. I'm done, now.

What are some recommended insurance companies used by everyone? I think the things that are killing us on insurance price is that our boat is an 06, we are 26 years old, and we have supercharged 525s. If anyone has a recommendation on a better price I welcome the suggestions.

Raise your deductible and lower your declared value - and then hope that you never need to use it (seriously). I don't think you are going to find anyone other than someone like Total Dollar (Sy Goldberg) or Midwest Performance (Greg ???) that will be able to write a legitimate policy. Sy gave us the best quote. Just my opinion, though.
